Shared Health leads the planning and coordinates the integration of patient-centered clinical and preventive health services across Manitoba. The organization also delivers some province-wide health services and supports centralized administrative and business functions for Manitoba health organizations.

Position Overview

Under the general supervision of the Director of the Winnipeg Cyclotron Facility (or designate), the incumbent is responsible for the preparation of radiopharmaceuticals and reagents under GMP, carrying out quality control of radiopharmaceuticals, production space environmental monitoring and cleaning, maintaining inventory to manufacture radiopharmaceutical products and operating the cyclotron as an auxiliary cyclotron operator for both internal and external customers for clinical use and research. The incumbent will be required to do radiotracer production work off hours (at night) in order to meet customer delivery times. The incumbent will assist in the development of new radiotracers using various radioisotopes and using automated synthesis units for both research and clinical imaging. The incumbent will support the Cyclotron Maintenance Specialist in maintenance activities of the cyclotron and other facility equipment.

Experience

  • Recent experience performing benchwork (wet chemistry) in a laboratory setting is required.
  • Experience with quality control (QC), GC, TLC and HPLC would be an asset.
  • Recent experience working in a GMP environment would be an asset.
  • Experience in programming and running of automated synthesis units (ASUs) for both [11C] and [18F] radiosynthesis would be an asset.
  • Experience working in a cyclotron or radiopharmacy program would be an asset.

Education (Degree/Diploma/Certificate)

  • University degree in Chemistry, Physics, Engineering, Biological Sciences or related field required or completion of diploma program in relevant field plus related experience required.

SPECIAL TRAINING:

  • On the job training with respect to:
    • Operation of automated radiosynthesis modules.
    • Operation of the cyclotron.
    • Operation of Gas Chromatography (GC), Thin Layer Chromatography (TLC), High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC), and other equipment related to production and quality control of radiopharmaceuticals.
    • Working under Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) conditions.
    • Sample collection and processing as part of the environmental monitoring (EM) program.
    • Compliance with the Canadian Nuclear Safety Act and the Regulations of the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC) in all work performed.
    • Compliance with the Regulations of the Drugs Directorate of Health Canada in all work performed.
    • Obtaining a “Certificate of Competence” in the Transport of Radioactive Dangerous Goods.
    • Obtaining an IATA Training Certificate for shipment of dangerous goods.

Certification/Licensure/Registration

  • The incumbent is required to be designated as a Nuclear Energy Worker (NEW) in accordance with the applicable Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC) legislation.

Physical Requirements

  • Should be willing to work off hours, nights, weekdays and weekends.
  • The incumbent will be required to come in at night to produce radiopharmaceuticals (run the cyclotron, load with reagents and run ASU) for supply to clinical and research imaging programs.
  • Physically able to lift lead transfer pots weighing up to 25 pounds.

This term position may end earlier as outlined in your collective agreement.
