The incumbent instructs aquatic programming to a diverse range of participants. Aspects of this role include preparation for instruction, delivery, evaluation, feedback, and assessment of skills.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Provides aquatic instruction for patrons; monitors activities being taught and ensures the quality of the programming meets standards.
- Prepares and implements lesson plans, instructional material, and provides technical guidance for age appropriate and skill-focused lessons based on participant abilities; prepares and distributes candidate progress reports, and prepares and submits statistical reports/records. Depending on experience may mentor lesson volunteers assigned to their programs.
- Receives and responds to questions, concerns, and complaints from patrons; determines issues and resolves or refers to higher-level staff as appropriate.
- Works collaboratively with participants and aquatic staff to ensure a positive learning environment.
- Under the direction of the Aquatic Supervisor, assists in developing or implementing specialized aquatic activities and events.
- Performs light custodial maintenance and minor repairs to facility and equipment, assisting in the inventory and stocking of first aid and program supplies.
- Maintains a clean and orderly workspace in accordance with Occupational Health and Safety standards.
- Inputs performance data from the program lessons.
- Attends seasonal in-service to maintain standards.
- Follows, so far as is reasonably practicable, established safety procedures and standards.

Working Conditions:
Exposure to constant noise, extreme temperatures when in and out of the water, and humidity in the pool environment.
Knowledge and Skills:
- Grade 10, or 15 years of age.
- Instructor experience an asset.
- Swim Instructor (SI) – Lifesaving Society.
- Workplace Hazardous Materials Information Systems certification (WHMIS).
- Lifesaving Instructor certification (LSI) an asset.
- Aqua Fitness Certification (CALA, WaterArt, BCRPA or equivalent) an asset.
An equivalent combination of education, training and experience may be considered.
