Customer Care and Patrol - Community Tourism and Safety Ambassador

CAP Team members are committed to promoting a friendlier and safer business community in the Downtown and North Shore. The Care and Patrol (CAP) Team supports Kamloops business communities by providing diverse services and support to businesses, residents, and tourists.

Training and Skills Development

Training is provided to ensure team members gain the appropriate skills to fulfill the responsibilities outlined here. Training lasts 1-2 weeks for core modules and may include additional training sessions and skills development opportunities.

Community Tourism Ambassador Duties:

Team members create a vibrant community by helping Downtown Kamloops organize and execute events, assist tourists in navigating and enjoying our community assets, and act as business liaisons to build relationships with our local businesses.

  • Develop constructive relationships with businesses, residents, visitors, and tourists to create positive experiences.
  • Support tourism by greeting visitors, leading Mural and Public Art tours, describing historical points of interest, and assisting with annual events and activities.

Community Safety Ambassador Duties:

Safety Ambassadors work with our community partners such as Community Service Officers, RCMP and Community Outreach, to advocate for businesses and elevate issues where appropriate regarding displaced individuals. Safety Ambassadors also communicate regularly with the Clean Team on community cleanliness.

  • Observe, respond to, and report incidents including unsafe conditions, crime, and graffiti.
  • Identify matters involving vulnerable populations and respond in conjunction with various community organizations and resources.
  • Liaise with businesses, Kamloops Community Services, RCMP, social organizations, and other City of Kamloops departments to promote safe streets.
  • Support the RCMP and Community Services with follow-up to various crime prevention strategies and initiatives.
  • Engage with our business members requesting CAP services.

The Work Environment

The CAP Team patrols in pairs to cover our Business Improvement Area, and reports to the CAP Team Supervisor.

The CAP team is an entry point for careers in Bylaw enforcement, Community Policing, legal, social, tourism, community development, hospitality, media, and public relations career streams, as well as the development of transferable soft skills: communication, conflict resolution, community relationship building, and leadership.

Downtown Kamloops (Kamloops Central Business Improvement Association) is an advocate for downtown businesses, articulating member concerns while at the same time capitalizing on opportunities to better position our downtown in the minds of residents and visitors. We promote our business members, assist in economic development, and undertake events and event management.

We also work to ensure safe communities, and we are looked to daily for our leadership and integrity.

  • Physically capable of patrolling on foot or bicycle for up to 8 hours a day in all weather conditions, (with accommodations for mobility challenges as required under legislation).
  • May be required to lift to 25 lbs to set up our annual community events.

Mandatory Requirements

The applicant is legally entitled to work according to all relevant provincial or federal legislation, guidelines, or regulations.As per summer funding regulations, we are only able to hire students who are Canadian citizens or permanent residents for this position.
