This employment opportunity is restricted to residents of Iqaluit only.

The Government of Nunavut was selected as one of Canada’s Best Diversity Employers, Top Employers for Young People and recent graduates in 2023. With one of the fastest growing and youngest populations in Canada, Nunavut is a dynamic, vibrant territory, committed to becoming an even better place for future generations. As a government, we are strengthening our unique model of governance - one that integrates Inuit societal values, promotes use of the Inuktut language, achieves a representative public service, and collaborates with partners to achieve the promise of Nunavut. Successful applicants will enjoy a competitive salary, medical and dental benefits, a defined benefit pension plan, relocation privileges and opportunities for training and career advancement.

Reporting to the Corrections Training and Development Manager, the Training Officer (Officer) is responsible for identifying staff training and development needs, and for planning, organizing, and overseeing appropriate training for Corrections staff, including the direct delivery of training. The Division’s mandate is to provide a correctional system that promotes healing and provides appropriate security and management for staff and clients. The Division of Corrections is responsible for adult and youth institutional services across Nunavut. In addition to correctional facilities, the Division administers Community Corrections which provides probationary services in a majority of Nunavut communities.

The Officer will be responsible for ensuring that Corrections employees have been appropriately trained to execute the vision, mission, and values of the Division. This position contributes to safety and security of all correctional facilities and Community Corrections offices across the territory. In addition, the position delivers training that provides programming and communication skills needed to support broader roles, such as case management or inmate rehabilitation. Through the training opportunities organized and delivered by the Training Officer, staff will receive the skills and knowledge necessary to succeed in their jobs. This has a direct impact on staff retention, individual career advancement, ensuring a safer work environment, and ultimately supporting the successful reintegration of correctional clientele back into their communities.

The knowledge, skills, and abilities required for this job are usually obtained through completion of a High school diploma or equivalent and Instructor development and/or Corrections Train the Trainer related courses/education, plus Corrections Career Development (Nunavut Corrections Qaujimalaaqtut Training Program) or equivalent. At least three (3) years’ work experience in a Corrections environment including experience delivering training/programs is also required. This is a Highly Sensitive Position and a satisfactory Criminal Record Check, along with a clear Vulnerable Sector Check is required.

The Official Languages of Nunavut are Inuktut, English and French. Applicants may submit their resume in any of the official languages of Nunavut. Fluency in more than one of Nunavut’s official languages would be considered an asset. Knowledge of Inuit communities, culture, land, Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit, Inuktut and experience working in a northern cross-cultural environment are also considered assets.

Acceptable combinations of education and experience may be considered for this position. We encourage you to apply if you have equivalent years of education and/or experience equal to the education and experience requirements listed above.

An eligibility list may be created to fill future vacancies.

  • The Government of Nunavut is committed to creating a representative workforce; therefore, priority will be given to Nunavut Inuit who self-identify as being enrolled under the Nunavut Agreement in accordance with the Priority Hiring Policy.
  • Government of Nunavut employees serving a probationary period must obtain and provide written authorization from the deputy head of their employing department. The authorization from the deputy head must accompany your application for your application to be considered.
  • Possession of a criminal record may not disqualify candidates from being considered. An assessment of the criminal record will be measured against the scope and duties of the position. This is only a requirement for positions that require a satisfactory criminal record or vulnerable sector check.
  • Applicants may submit their resume in any of the Official Languages of Nunavut.
  • Only those candidates selected for an interview will be contacted.
  • The onus is on candidates in receipt of foreign post-secondary education credentials to have their foreign credentials assessed through a recognized Canadian education institution. Failure to do so may result in the rejection of their application.
