Join the City of Medicine Hat as a Coordinator - Safety Compliance

Permanent, Full time, On Site


This professional role supports the development, implementation, and evaluation of the City's Health and Safety Management System (HSMS). Responsibilities include conducting audits and inspections, ensuring compliance with health and safety legislation, development of safety training and collaborating with Safety Specialists to enhance regulatory performance. Additionally, this role provides safety, technological, and administrative support for audits, training, and SOPs.


This position is an on-site position located in Medicine Hat, Alberta. Relocation Assistance is available for the successful candidate. Your key responsibilities

  • Develop, lead and enhance the internal and external audit processes for the City's Health and Safety Management System (HSMS).
  • Plan and conduct safety audits to ensure compliance with regulations and identify areas for improvement.
  • Act as a subject matter expert, providing guidance on audit methodologies and compliance best practices.
  • Serve as the primary liaison for the City's incident management and SDS software.
  • Ensure consistent application of the HSMS across all departments.
  • Monitor and summarize legislative updates, ensuring compliance with health and safety regulations.
  • Analyze health and safety data, including KPIs and audit findings, to drive continuous improvement.
  • Advise and provide guidance on all health and safety matters for the departments located in City Hall.

What you bring

  • Strong knowledge of health and safety management systems and applicable Alberta OHS legislation.
  • Proven expertise in conducting audits with precision and attention to detail.
  • Advanced analytical, communication, and critical thinking skills.
  • Ability to build relationships and collaborate with diverse stakeholders.
  • Strong organizational skills and prioritization abilities.
  • High standards of ethics, integrity, and discretion.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, ERP systems, and safety-related software.

Qualifications

  • Successful completion of a diploma in occupational health and safety, or related discipline from a recognized post-secondary institution.
  • Five (5) years of directly related work experience in administering Health, Safety, Environmental or Emergency Management Systems.
  • Possess and maintain a valid Class 5 Driver's License with an acceptable driving record.
  • Possess, or ability to obtain the Alberta Municipal Health and Safety Association auditor qualification and/or Safety Management Systems internal auditor qualification through a recognized certifying body.
  • An equivalent combination of management approved education and experience may be considered.
