Campus & Community Recreation is the host of multiple wellness activities and events that run throughout the University of Alberta campus. This includes recreational events and programs that are available at South Campus as well as North Campus.

Campus & Community Recreation offers programs and facilities aimed to meet the needs and interests of the broad range of communities that we serve. From group exercise to individualized personal training; from healthy living activities to physical assessments preparing for specific work environments; from recreational sports to elite sports training; and a range of ethnic and cultural dance, Campus & Community Recreation has the breadth and depth of activities to enhance the experiences of students, staff and community members alike.

The role of Campus & Community Recreation is to contribute to the overall academic vision of the university. We support our communities (students, staff, faculty, and community members) to explore and enhance their physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual well-being through physical and social activity.

Campus & Community Recreation offers large, year-round Intramurals, Club Sports, Outreach, and Engagement Programs involving over 10,000 participants annually.

Position

Reporting to the Team Lead, Fitness, Leisure & Wellness (FLW), the Coordinator, Fitness Facility and Programs is an integral member of the Campus & Community Recreation Program team. The Coordinator is responsible for the day-to-day operation & delivery of fitness facilities (North, South CSJ and Various Residences), programs, personal training, as well as other special event activities. Within a framework of sport and facility management, tasks associated include facility operations, event management, competitive & recreational structure, student leadership development, and engaging users in safely utilizing the fitness centers.

The Coordinator will also participate in the implementation of other campus events (such as Reccrawl, orientation activities, open house events, competitions and fundraising activities) and promotions as required. The Team Lead, Fitness, Leisure and Wellness will assign duties in the area of Fitness facilities & operations, programs, activities, personal training and special events throughout the year based on operational needs. The Coordinator will interact with groups of individuals within Campus & Community Recreation offering a variety of programming and services. They must exhibit effective teamwork, collaboration, and communication skills.

Duties

  • Responsible for the day-to-day oversight of CCR Fitness facilities, programs, personal training and events as assigned by the Team Lead, Fitness, Leisure & Wellness (FLW); responsibilities include operations, planning, program delivery, scheduling, processing facility allocation requests and user groups, addressing equipment needs, human resource oversight, risk management monitoring, results reporting, and statistical reporting under the supervision of the Team Lead, FLW.
  • In consultation with the Team Lead, FLW, design and conduct program needs assessment processes by evaluating client demand and program trends.
  • Plan and deliver high-quality student-focused programs and activities in assigned program focus areas.
  • Train and coach casual staff.
  • Work collaboratively with the Team Lead, FLW to maximize customer experiences in the Fitness Centres, including the review and development of systems, policies and procedures that foster participation, access, and enjoyment.
  • Collaborate with the Manager, Programs and Team Lead, FLW, to manage the inventory and life cycle of Fitness Centers operations supplies and equipment.
  • Develop relationships within the university and Edmonton communities to create collaborative program offerings.
  • Develop and participate in promotional activities across campus designed to enhance student and community awareness in the area of recreation and physical activity.
  • Instruct or support staffing for Fitness center facilities & programs as qualified and as needed.
  • Perform and document facility and equipment safety inspections in the area of responsibility.
  • Understand, fulfill and promote the health, safety and environmental responsibilities as defined in the University’s Health and Safety Policy.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Manager, Programs.
  • Maintain necessary qualifications and skills to operate the facility and instruct/supervise programs as required.
  • Assist with the administration of committees.
  • Assist with Student Orientation activities and events.
  • This position is required to work evenings and weekends.

Minimum Qualifications

  • An undergraduate degree in kinesiology, physical education, recreation, sport management or a related field is required.
  • Police Information Check and Vulnerable Sector Check required.
  • Minimum of one year experience related to facility, sport, recreation and/or event management.
  • Computer experience is required.
  • Standard First Aid & CPR Level C is required (within 2 years).

This is a safety-sensitive position.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Certification in the Certified Personal Training with CSEP or Equivalent required; Certification in Certified Exercise Physiologist with CSEP or Equivalent.
  • Experience in Recreation Facility Management Software.
  • Experience in facility management, programming, officiating and/or instructing in sports and recreation activities.
  • Experience with equipment purchasing.
  • Customer service and problem-solving experience.
