Job Description

Our private Canadian client, a well-established and fast-growing company in Kitchener, is seeking a highly motivated and experienced Controller to lead its accounting function and build out a robust Financial Planning & Analysis (FP&A) capability. Reporting directly to the Chief Financial Officer (CFO), the Controller will be a key member of the finance leadership team responsible for overseeing all aspects of the company's accounting operations, ensuring the accuracy and integrity of financial reporting, and establishing a strong FP&A function to drive strategic decision-making. The ideal candidate will be a hands-on leader with a strong technical accounting background, proven experience managing and developing teams, and a passion for leveraging data to provide insightful financial analysis.

Responsibilities:

Financial Planning & Analysis (FP&A) - Build-Out & Ongoing Responsibilities:

  • Establish and lead the FP&A function: this includes defining processes, identifying opportunities, and building reporting frameworks.
  • Develop and maintain budgeting and forecasting processes, working collaboratively with department heads to create realistic and achievable financial plans.
  • Analyze actual financial results against budgets and forecasts, identifying variances and providing insightful explanations to management.
  • Develop key performance indicators (KPIs) and dashboards to track business performance and provide actionable insights.
  • Conduct financial modeling and analysis to support strategic initiatives, investment decisions, and business planning.
  • Prepare and present financial reports and presentations to senior management and stakeholders to provide financial guidance and support business decisions.

Accounting & Financial Reporting:

  • Oversee all aspects of the company's accounting operations, including general ledger, accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, and inventory accounting.
  • Ensure timely and accurate preparation of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements in accordance with applicable accounting standards.
  • Develop and maintain accounting policies, procedures, and internal controls to safeguard company assets and ensure compliance.
  • Manage the year-end audit process and liaise with external auditors.
  • Prepare and file all required tax returns and ensure compliance with tax regulations.
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date fixed asset records.
  • Manage cash flow forecasting and reporting.

Team Leadership & Management:

  • Foster a positive and collaborative team environment, promoting professional growth and development.
  • Set clear performance expectations, provide regular feedback, and conduct performance reviews.
  • Mentor and develop a team of three direct reports within the accounting function and effectively delegate tasks and responsibilities to team members.

Other Responsibilities:

  • Identify and implement opportunities to improve accounting processes and systems.
  • Stay current on relevant accounting standards and regulations.
  • Participate in special projects and initiatives as required.
  • Build strong working relationships across all departments within the company.
Qualifications:
  • Professional accounting designation (CPA, CA, CMA, CGA) is mandatory.
  • Minimum of 7-10 years of progressive accounting experience.
  • Strong technical accounting skills and FP&A experience is highly desirable.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently, prioritize tasks, and meet deadlines.
  • Strong leadership skills with a proven record building and developing high-performing teams.
