The Brooks Composite High School (BCHS) is hiring! The Brooks Composite High School (BCHS) is seeking applications for a Construction Educational Assistant to work with the CTS Construction teacher to deliver woodworking skills to students. This position will be under a temporary contract for the 2024/2025 School Year. Educational Assistants (EAs) assist teachers with many instructional and non-instructional tasks in the classroom and with other school activities. EAs work as members of the school and student support team. EAs either work with a particular special needs student or a group of students within a class or in a special program.

About the Program

The Career and Technology Studies (CTS) program is designed to develop skills that students can apply in their daily lives when preparing for entry into the workplace or for further learning opportunities. Through the CTS program, students are provided with opportunities to personalize their learning, identify, and explore their interests, manage transitions between high school and the workplace or post-secondary, and develop the attitudes and behaviors that people need to participate and progress in today’s dynamic world of work.

The Brooks Composite High School (BCHS) is a high school of over 700 students in grades 10-12. We offer a full range of all the academic offerings in addition to a well-respected vocational program that includes Mechanics, Construction, Cosmetology, Foods, and Digital Media.

Job Duties

Under the supervision of the CTS teacher:

  • Assist in supporting students by providing group instruction and individual guidance.
  • Effectively prepare for classes by setting up construction demos.
  • Assist in ensuring student safety by providing instructions on workplace and tool safety.
  • Repair broken tools.
  • Promote positive attitudes toward the school community.

Ideal Candidates Skills & Abilities

  • Carpentry and Woodworking skills.
  • Able to measure accurately, make precise cuts, and place and align pieces correctly.
  • Able to operate a variety of power tools/equipment and assemble and disassemble materials according to safety procedures and protocols.
  • Able to ensure that safe working procedures and conditions are always adhered to, and follow all safety protocols.
  • On a daily basis, able to perform tasks that may be physically demanding, including but not limited to climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crawling, bending, turning, reaching, lifting, carrying, pulling, pushing, and prolonged sitting and standing; and able to tolerate and work around dust and fumes.
  • Able to work in crowded and loud environments.
  • Able to collaboratively deliver instruction and manage a classroom.
  • Strong communication skills; written, verbal, and reading.
  • Able to contribute to a classroom environment that supports diversity and inclusion.
  • Respect and value all individuals with sensitivity to diversity.
  • Personal integrity and trustworthiness.
  • Understanding of how this role impacts the community.
  • Able to quickly build trust, rapport, and strong relationships with Grasslands students, employees, and our community.
  • Enjoys working with high school level students.
  • Understanding and appreciation of Grasslands Public Schools mission and values.

Preferred Education & Experience

  • High school diploma or equivalent education.
  • Journeyperson certificate in an applicable trade (preferred).
  • Relevant experience supervising or training apprentices would be considered an asset.

Required Documentation

  • Current Criminal Record Check (CRC) with Vulnerable Sector Check (VSC) - Original document reported within the last 6 months of hire date; condition of employment.
