The mission of the Department of Military is to provide a professional staff of Arkansas State Employees who help maintain and improve the readiness of Arkansas National Guard units through effective fiscal management of State Resources, Human Resource Management, and quality administration of Arkansas National Guard Programs.

The Department of the Military is a Drug-Free Workplace, this includes medical marijuana which is still considered a controlled substance under federal law. (Drug-Free Workplace Act of 1988)

Summary

The Computer Support Analyst is responsible for a wide range of activities related to computer support such as the maintenance and utilization of microcomputer and mainframe systems. This position is governed by state and federal laws and agency/institution policy.

Functions

1. Resolves hardware or software problems in response to user questions and requests for assistance by diagnosing the source of malfunctions, recommending corrective actions, and/or consulting with appropriate staff or vendor.
2. Configures and installs microcomputer hardware and software for users.
3. Installs software updates and coordinates with developer or manufacturer to resolve problems and may analyze computer generated products to identify source of errors and work with system developers and users to resolve problems.
4. Manages disk space for micro, mini, or personal computer system, with multiple terminals and printers transmitting data to host system, bringing system up, taking system down, and backing up system to preserve data.
5. Researches new technology and methodology and evaluates new products to determine their usefulness to agency users.
6. Recommends changes or updates in programming, documentation, and training to address system deficiencies and user needs.
7. Trains other employees in system operation and maintains system instructional manuals and supplies.
8. Performs other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

• Knowledge of the limitations and use of mainframe and microcomputer hardware and software.
• Ability to analyze computer system problems or errors and devise corrective measures.
• Ability to write moderately complex applications to fulfill requirements or select appropriate off-the-shelf software and modify it to suit the agency or institution.
• Ability to read and interpret technical literature and evaluate product acceptability and/or quality.
• Ability to manage disk space for micro, mini, or personal computer systems to ensure effective utilization of data, space, and equipment.
• Ability to code, test, and debug computer programs and write program documentation.

Minimum Qualifications

The formal education is equivalent to a bachelor’s degree in computer science, mathematics, or a related field.

OR

Completion of technical training in computer science, data processing, or a related field acquired from a vocational, military, or industrial setting; plus, two years of experience in computer support operations.

Additional requirements determined by the agency for recruiting purposes require review and approval by the Office of Personnel Management.
