Position: Community Outreach Worker (2 positions)

Salary Range: $24.57 – $27.09/hour (pending qualifications)

Location: Child & Family Services Department

Report to: Supervisor, Community Outreach

POSITION SUMMARY

The Community Outreach Worker is responsible for providing education and support to various target groups to improve life skills to build a strong community for our children and families by facilitating a wide range of evidence-based primary and secondary prevention programs and strategies to address risk factors experienced by children, youth, and parents. The Community Outreach Worker functions within legislative requirements, regulations, policies and procedures and the Mission, Beliefs and Vision of the Child and Family Services Department, and contributes to the accomplishment of the strategic priorities.

DUTIES

  1. Developing and/or modifying relevant and age-specific and culturally appropriate curriculum and resources;
  2. Implementing curriculum/resources through workshops and/or circles at various sites within the community and/or in homes;
  3. Using a variety of teaching techniques including modeling, observing, questioning, demonstrating, and reinforcing to promote healthy living;
  4. Educating, encouraging, and supporting participants to practice self-help skills;
  5. Actively promoting healthy choices, habits, and lifestyles by providing participants with appropriate resources and materials;
  6. Planning and carrying out program activities which facilitate an understanding of our Indigenous culture, language, and value system in relation to healthy living;
  7. Working with other professionals in developing specific programs/resources for children, youth, and parents as appropriate;
  8. Completing administrative tasks, inputting information into the database system in a timely manner;
  9. Performing other related duties as may be required and assigned;

QUALIFICATIONS

  1. Required Post Secondary Diploma in Community Services or related field;
  2. Required minimum six months related experience;
  3. Experience with group facilitation and presentations;
  4. Knowledge and interest in issues affecting Indigenous people;
  5. Demonstrated sensitivity to and knowledge of First Nation cultural values and traditions;
  6. Excellent knowledge of the resources and services provided both internally/externally to the community;
  7. Excellent facilitation, coordination, assessment, and planning skills;
  8. Ability to work flexible hours including evenings and weekends;
  9. Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines;
  10. Ability to work independently and collaboratively as a member of a team;
  11. Excellent organizational skills, time management skills, interpersonal skills, and communication skills, both oral and written;
  12. Proficient in the use of computer software (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook);
  13. Must have valid G Driver’s License;
  14. Must undergo a criminal record check with vulnerable Sector Check prior to employment (At applicant's expense).
