The University of Lethbridge is currently seeking applications for a Communication Specialist. This is a full-time, in-person, continuing position on the Lethbridge Campus. The key portfolio responsibilities for this position are Iniskim Indigenous Relations, and Accessibility, Belonging and Community, which are both key strategic priorities at ULethbridge.

A key team member in a network model, the Communication Specialist reports to the Director of Communications in the Department of Communications, Marketing and Government Relations ( CMGR ). This position works very closely with the CMGR team including other communication specialists who manage portfolios from across the University, as well the Iniskim Indigenous Relations and Accessibility, Belonging and Community teams at the University.

The Communications Specialist is an experienced communications professional, a skilled writer and a social media expert. The Communications Specialist plays an integral role in developing and coordinating communications strategies and materials that are aligned with the institutional strategic communication plan, supports the work of Iniskim Indigenous Relations and Accessibility, Belonging and Inclusion, and advances the University’s brand and public image.

Responsibilities include:

  • Aligned with ULethbridge’s Strategic Plan and MarCom plan, develop department-level communication plans that support Iniskim Indigenous Relations, and Accessibility, Belonging and Community initiatives and priorities, build brand, and strengthen relationships with diverse audiences internally, locally, provincially, nationally and internationally.
  • Develop dynamic, compelling narratives and communications materials that engage and motivate audiences. This includes feature writing, editorial writing, marketing copy, news releases, newsletters, internal communications, graphics, photography, videography, print materials for internal and external distribution, digital marketing materials, branded materials, promotional merchandise.
  • Perform general website updates, maintenance, and content development of portfolio website content.
  • Provide communication planning, content creation, coordination and support for events.
  • Support institutional communications and implement the strategic communication plan. This includes:
    • Working within a team environment, communications specialists manage the institutional social media channels and develop targeted content for each channel and audience.
    • Provide communications support and develop content for institutional projects and initiatives.

Some evening / weekend work and travel may be required. Applications need to include a cover letter, resume and link to portfolio of work that is aligned with details and qualification related to this position.

Position Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in communications, journalism, English, or a related field.
  • Excellent writing, editing and communication skills including editorial/feature writing and writing for the web, as well as Canadian Press writing standards.
  • Social media expert including strategy, content development, execution and measurement.
  • Proven event communications / marketing planning and execution experience.
  • Strong project management and time management skills.
  • High level of computer literacy, including MS Office, Sharepoint, Teams, Zoom, Campaign Monitor (or other e-newsletter programs) and updating web content in a Drupal environment.
  • Basic photography and videography skills.
  • Creative thinker, ability to use data to measure effectiveness.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, deadline-driven creative environment with competing priorities.
  • Knowledge of Equity, Accessibility, Belonging and Inclusion principles, Indigenous Ways of Knowing and Blackfoot culture and language.
  • Knowledge of undergraduate and graduate programming and research at the University of Lethbridge an asset.

A valid unrestricted Class 5 Driver’s License with no more than 6 demerits and submission of a motor vehicle record (driver abstract) dated within 3 months of the posting close is required.

Starting Salary Range (at 1.0 FTE)

Full Salary Range (at 1.0 FTE) $5,291.00 - $6,687.00 monthly (AUPE - Grade 12)
