About the ProgramThe Provincial Laboratory Medicine Service (PLMS) is partnering with the BC Ministry of Health (BCMOH), Provincial Health Services Authority (PHSA), Fraser Health Authority (FHA), and Vancouver Coastal Health Authority (VCH) to sponsor a select number of students for the Combined Laboratory and X-Ray Technologist (CLXT) training program at the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology (NAIT). This unique, in-demand program trains you in both medical laboratory and x-ray imaging disciplines designed especially for health care delivery in rural communities.

Program Structure- Year 1 - 38 weeks of full-time classroom training at NAIT in Edmonton, Alberta.
- Year 2 - 40-week hospital practicum at Mission General Hospital.
Within 6 months of successful completion of the NAIT CLXT program, you will be required to successfully complete the following courses through NAIT Continuing Education:- TRAM101 Fundamentals of Blood Product Management (Online)
- TRAM201 Pretransfusion Testing and Basic Investigative Techniques (Online)
- Application of Transfusion Medicine Techniques at Mission General Hospital

- You are living in or willing to move/commute to Mission General Hospital.
- Must be legally entitled to work in Canada.
Core Competencies- Demonstrated knowledge of the historic and ongoing impacts of settler colonialism on Indigenous Peoples in social and health contexts.
- Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of legislative obligations and provincial commitments within LM Labs contexts.
- Brings an understanding of Indigenous specific racism and broader systemic racism in health care.
- Awareness of social, economic, political, and historical realities of settler colonialism on Indigenous Peoples.
- Demonstrates a commitment to beginning and/or continuing their personal learning journey related to Indigenous-specific racism.
- Demonstrates foundational knowledge of social determinants of health and their impact on health outcomes.
Program Eligibility & RequirementsTo be eligible, you must meet the following academic requirements:
- Grade 12 with a minimum 63% in each of the following:
- Language Arts (English 30-2)
- Mathematics (Math 30-2)
- Biology (Biology 30)
- Chemistry (Chemistry 30)
- Proof of English Language Proficiency
You must also have the following post-secondary pre-requisites (completed within the past five years):
- Medical Terminology: Completion of NAIT ITMS100 - Medical Terminology with a minimum final grade of 60% within the last 5 years.
- Human Anatomy and Physiology: Completion of NAIT ANPH100 Anatomy and Physiology with a minimum final grade of 60% within the last 5 years.
Important Notes- Selected applicants must enroll in the September 2025 NAIT CLXT intake.
- Current Provincial Health Services Authority (PHSA) staff will be placed on unpaid educational leave for the 2-year duration and paid the stipend of $930.00 per week.
- You must complete the program and commit to a 2-year placement at Mission General Hospital.
- Do NOT apply directly to NAIT at this time.
