Job description

Job Summary:

Reporting to the Division Manager, the CNC Operator in Grande Prairie, Alberta is responsible for following the company standard work procedures and safety policies while performing day-to-day duties.

Essential Job Responsibilities:

  • Perform the rotary shouldered connections re-cutting operation using computer numerically controlled (CNC) machine to assure compliance with customer requirements and production of re-cut rotary shoulder connection to the acceptable level of quality.
  • Perform API and Proprietary Thread connection re-cutting using computer numerically controlled (CNC) machine to assure compliance with customer requirements and production of re-cut connection to the acceptable level of quality.
  • Plan machining by studying work orders, blueprints, engineering plans, materials, specifications, orthographic drawings, reference planes, locations of surfaces, and machining parameters. Verify settings by measuring positions, first-run part, and sample work pieces adhering to international standards.
  • Write or modify existing programs that allow the CNC lathe to cut API, Proprietary or rotary shoulder connections.
  • Maintain specifications by observing drilling, grooving, and cutting operations; taking measurements; detecting malfunctions; troubleshooting processes; adjusting and reprogramming controls; and replacing worn tools; adhering to quality assurance procedures and processes.
  • Observe machine operation to verify accuracy of machine settings and detect malfunctions or out of tolerance, machining and using precision instruments to adjust the machine as needed.
  • Maintain equipment by completing preventive maintenance requirements; following manufacturer’s instructions; troubleshooting malfunctions; calling for repairs.
  • Be flexible to work in the shop where needed.
  • Travel is required; be flexible to work in Nisku, Alberta when needed.

Qualification Requirements:

  • High school graduation and completion of a diploma training program at a college or technical school OR college diploma in related discipline; or equivalent.
  • Ability to understand, utilize, and communicate specialized information in speech and written text.
  • Direct or indirect related work experience representing continuous learning is required.
  • Knowledge and experience in oilfield tubular and pipe handling will be beneficial.
  • Maintain safe operations by adhering to safety procedures and regulations.
  • Document actions by completing production and quality logs.
  • Ability to work effectively with minimal supervision and meet deadlines in a timely and efficient manner.
  • Demonstrated problem-solving, planning, and organizational skills. Ability to read, understand, and interpret drawings and diagrams.
  • Working knowledge of related company instructions, company processes, reworks process instructions, original equipment manufacturer manuals and design.

Technical Requirements:

  • Perform programming at the controls level, set up and operate CNC lathes. Working knowledge of Mazak CNC lathe and Mazatrol programming languages.
  • Ability to perform program creation and modification during all phases of production. The programmer will machine the rotary shouldered connections (new and used drill pipe and collars) using computer numerically controlled (CNC) machine to assure compliance with customer requirements and to the acceptable level of quality.
  • The programmer/machinist will monitor quality by taking measurements, detecting malfunctions, troubleshooting processes; adjusting and reprogramming control while adhering to quality assurance procedures and processes.
  • Program computer numerical controlled (CNC) machine by entering instructions including zero and reference point; setting tool register, offsets, compensation and conditional switches; calculating requirements, including basic math.
  • Experienced in machining to very tight tolerances in a fast-paced, repetitive machining environment.
  • Minimum of 3 years’ experience as a programmer/machinist in a manufacturing environment.
  • Provide support, training, and problem resolution to operations personnel who use computer numerically controlled (CNC).
  • Liaise with plant manager regarding component repairs & inspection.
  • Monitor performance, conduct feasibility studies, and implement process improvements for computer numerically controlled (CNC) machines.
  • Strong organizational, analytical, and oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to read, understand, and interpret drawings and diagrams.

HSE Requirements:

  • Shop environment orientation (exits, fire extinguishers, first aid & eyewash stations, spill kits).
  • Standing, walking, squatting, lifting, and bending.
  • Training on proper usage of PPE if exposed to noise, dust, and fumes.
  • WHMIS training.
  • Lock-out/Tag-out training.
  • NOV in-house forklift training if required.
  • NOV in-house Overhead/Jib crane training if required.
  • Material Handling procedure training.
  • Hand & Power tool safety training.
