Job Type: Temporary Full Time

Travel Requirement: Hours (subject to change)

Hours: 37.5 hours, due to the nature of the position, additional hours may be required

Salary Scale:

This is a temporary full-time assignment up to approximately six (6) months.

Sinai Health is looking for a Clinical Nurse Specialist to support our Surgical Oncology department at our Mount Sinai Hospital Campus.

The Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) Surgical Oncology is an advanced practice nurse who functions in an expanded role within a collaborative practice model. Emphasis will be on working with Oncology patients and their families during their experience at Mount Sinai Hospital and within a multidisciplinary team framework to set patient-related goals and a comprehensive plan of care.

About this team:

We are a 26-bed surgical oncology unit providing post-operative care to patients who have undergone GI, breast, or urology surgery. Admissions to our unit come via our Emergency Department, ICU, and PACU teams. Typical patient ratios for nurses on our team are 4:1 on days and 6:1 on nights. The patient population is predominantly surgical oncology (including retroperitoneal, pelvic, visceral, sarcomas, gastrointestinal stromal tumors, colorectal cancer, breast cancer, thyroid cancer), although we also see patients from general surgery, palliative care, and inflammatory bowel disease.

In this role you will:

  • Demonstrate a comprehensive theoretical knowledge base and advanced level of clinical competence in the care of surgical oncology critically ill patients.
  • Be a role model for, and participate in, the provision of care to complex families.
  • Develop and maintain standards of nursing practice through creation of an environment conducive to growth and development of staff.
  • Interpret and foster the philosophy, goals, and standards of the Department of Nursing.
  • Collaborate on the establishment of goals and objectives for the population consistent with the provision of high-quality patient and family-centered care.
  • Participate in the programmatic development of the clinical area.
  • Play a leadership role, leading quality activities and administrative duties including committee involvement.
  • Participate in policy and procedure development.
  • Play a leadership role in the collaborative design, implementation, and evaluation of information technologies in surgical oncology.
  • Perform research activities and promote evidence-based clinical practice.
  • Deliver, coordinate, and participate in education and professional development activities/programs; perform activities to further develop and strengthen the profession including the supervision of students.
  • Develop evaluation strategies related to the Surgical Oncology CNS role.
  • Perform other duties consistent with the job classification, as required.

Job Requirements:

Mandatory:

  • Current certificate of registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO).
  • Completion (or in progress) of a Master's Degree Program in Nursing (Bachelor's Degree in Nursing with a Master's Degree in a related discipline may be considered).
  • 5 - 10 years recent experience in Surgical/Oncology Nursing.
  • Member of RNAO.
  • Eligible for cross-appointment to an academic institution.
