Business Unit: Metlakatla First Nation (MFN)
Location: Metlakatla, British Columbia
Reporting to: CLH Director
The Metlakatla First Nation has an opening for a full-time Culture, Language, and Heritage Assistant position. The CLH program provides Culture, Language and Heritage supporting services to the Governing Council, Stewardship Office, Treaty Office, and Metlakatla Membership. The successful candidate will be responsible for providing comprehensive administrative support to the Culture, Language, and Heritage (CLH) Administrator and Director of the CLH department. The CLH Assistant is essential in aiding the smooth operation of the department, which is dedicated to preserving and promoting the rich cultural heritage, language, and traditions of the Metlakatla First Nation.
Responsibilities:
- Assist in the coordination and execution of activities and operations within the CLH Department, including Sm’algyax language programs, cultural workshops, archiving, archaeological research, policy development and implementation.
- Support with CLH department communication and coordination with other departments, community partners, Elders, Knowledge holders, and outside agencies.
- Help in the development and implementation of departmental goals, objectives, and priorities for culture, language, and heritage activities.
- Assist in monitoring and maintaining department systems on budgeting and documentation.
- Support timely preparation and submission of reports to meet external funding requirements, including monthly reports or as needed.
- Perform other administrative tasks as required within the scope of the position to support the CLH department.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Knowledge of Coast Tsimshian culture and practices, and a demonstrated ability to work successfully and respectfully with First Nation communities.
- Understanding of First Nations issues, traditional ecological knowledge, and the importance of these to governance, community development, and resource management.
- Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple tasks and timelines.
- Ability to work individually with little supervision and as part of a dynamic team.
- Hard-working with the ability to deliver multiple projects within tight time constraints.
- Comfortable and competent working in a community setting with Elders, Knowledge Holders, and Youth.
- Comfortable working in both office and outdoor conditions.
- Willingness to learn and participate in multiple seasonal cultural activities and events.
- Proficiency in the use of current office productivity software (Microsoft Office suite of products).
- Familiarity with data management systems, software, and audio-visual equipment is an asset.
- Familiarity with Sm’algyax Language is an asset.
Competencies and Qualifications:
- Diploma, Degree, or Certificate in Anthropology, Archaeology, cultural resource management, Sm’algyax Language, or related field is an asset.
- Prior administrative experience is an asset.
- Prior experience conducting culture, language, and heritage research, documentation, and archiving in a First Nations community is preferred.
Working Conditions:
- Location on-site Metlakatla, BC.
- Occasional travel as required.
- Exposure to culturally sensitive topics.
- Some outdoor work as needed.

The wage range is $24.30 – 26.50 per hour.
