1) ENVIRONMENTAL PLANNER 1

POSITION OVERVIEW

Join Our Team and Make an Environmental Impact!

Are you passionate about sustainability and environmental planning? Do you thrive in a regulatory and inspectional role that shapes community initiatives? We are looking for an Environmental Planner to play a key role in processing development applications, enforcing environmental bylaws, and shaping policies that protect and enhance our natural environment.

In This Role You Will:

1. Process development applications, review building permit referrals, review environmental permits, and ensure projects meet regulatory requirements for trees, soil, erosion and sediment control, watercourses, and natural features.
2. Investigate environmental complaints, monitor compliance, and enforce relevant municipal bylaws.
3. Draft environmental policies, objectives, bylaws, and regulations based on legislative requirements and best practices.
4. Conduct field inspections for municipal and private projects, ensuring environmental compliance related to stormwater management, riparian habitats, species at risk, and more.
5. Act as a liaison between municipal staff, regulatory agencies, property owners, developers, and environmental organizations, providing guidance and expertise on environmental matters.
6. Represent the City at intergovernmental forums and workshops, keeping abreast of regional environmental trends and policies.

DESIRABLE TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE

University graduation in an appropriate discipline plus a post graduate degree in Community or Regional Planning or other related areas supplemented by some professional planning experience; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

1. Considerable knowledge of the practices, principles, techniques and methods applicable to environmental management.
2. Considerable knowledge of the rules, regulations, policies, bylaw objectives and legislation governing the work.
3. Sound knowledge of analytical and research techniques and methodology and of the current trends and developments in environmental protection.
4. Ability to assess the environmental impact of development upon the Municipality, including conformance with applicable environmental legislation and regulations and draft amendments to the bylaws suitable to the needs of the community as established by Council.

2) ENVIRONMENTAL PLANNER 2

POSITION OVERVIEW

Shape the Future of Sustainable Development!

We’re seeking an Environmental Planner to help shape forward-thinking policies and lead sustainability initiatives that will influence the future of our city.

In This Role You Will:

1. Prepare studies, recommend bylaw amendments, and develop long-term environmental plans and strategies.
2. Conduct environmental data collection, on-site inspections, and technical reviews to support policy decisions.
3. Liaise with municipal staff, government agencies, consultants, and community groups to ensure sustainability goals are met.
4. Represent the City at intergovernmental forums, provide professional input on environmental issues, and contribute to task forces and committees.
5. Assess environmental impacts of development proposals and provide expert recommendations to Council and City officials.

DESIRABLE TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE

Master’s degree in resource management, environmental planning or, environmental science or discipline related to the work with considerable experience in an environmental management environment, or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Qualification as a RP Biologist, and work experience in a planning environment would be an asset.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

This is professional planning work in the analysis of policy planning issues, including the preparation of related reports and recommendations for review by a superior. The work involves the assembly, research, analysis and interpretation of historical, economic, physical, legal, statistical and other data for departmental studies and projects. The incumbent maintains liaison with a variety of contacts and attends related internal and external meetings and may supervise technical subordinates assigned to a specific project. An employee exercises considerable independence of action and judgment, referring complex problems or policy matters to a superior who reviews work performance in terms of achievement of desired objectives.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

University graduation in an appropriate discipline, plus a post graduate degree in Community or Regional Planning or other related areas, supplemented by some professional planning experience, OR an equivalent combination of training and experience.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

1. Considerable knowledge of the practices, principles, techniques, and methods applicable to urban planning operations.

This is a Professional Planner position in the Community Planning Section of the Planning Department.

This position will participate:

1. In a number of policy projects, including the completion of various area planning processes, including the preparation and completion of community consultation programs, undertaking housing and land use policy research, and preparing and presenting policy-related reports to senior staff and council for their consideration.
2. In the coordination and liaison with Council appointed committees.
3. In policy and regulation interpretation in support of processing development applications.

The ideal candidate requires knowledge of principles, practices, and objectives of urban and regional planning; zoning by-laws and official community plans; application processing and development processes; public consultation tools and methods; and environmental, social and heritage planning. Preference will be given to candidates that have three years of policy experience.

POSITION OVERVIEW

POSITION OVERVIEW

The City of Maple Ridge has an exciting opportunity for a Planner 1 position. This position applies specialized planning knowledge in the interpretation of plans, policies and bylaws to the review of development applications within urban and rural environments.

Work involves the review of a range of development applications including subdivisions, apartments and other moderately complex developments; and making recommendations on the amendment of bylaws and other types of applications for such developments.

While work assignments and objectives are set forth by management staff, the Planner 1 is expected to exercise initiative and judgment in carrying out their work.
