Circulation Assistant (Full-time), BiblioTemps (Flint Public Library) (Middleton)

BiblioTemps is an employment service of the Massachusetts Library System that provides experienced library workers for temporary placements in public, academic, and special libraries throughout Massachusetts.

Location: Flint Public Library (Middleton, MA)

Position Type: Temporary

Start date: As soon as possible

End date: April 1, 2025

Schedule: 40 hours per week; Monday - Friday 9:00AM - 5:00PM

Pay Rate: $24.00 per hour

CORI: Required

Essential Functions:

The essential functions or duties listed below are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work that may be performed. The omission of specific statements of duties does not exclude them from the position if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment to the position.

  1. Perform work at the circulation desks including: check materials in and out; place holds on library materials; issue library cards; answer directional questions; assist patrons with basic instructions on the use of the computer catalogs; telephone patrons when reserved materials are received; assist patrons on the use of the photocopier; collect fees for printing, faxing, photocopying, etc.; answer the telephone; and empty the book drop.
  2. Answer patron account, library logistics, and directional questions, and direct more complex inquiries to appropriate staff members.
  3. Provide librarians with assistance in programs for children, teens, and adults.
  4. Help support scheduling and work closely with HR to ensure adequate staff coverage is in the building during key hours, along with other administrative tasks as needed.
  5. Provide assistance with elevated patron requests and be a support to HR and library staff with library-specific issues/inquires while the library director and assistant director are out on leave.
  6. Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Qualifications:

Master’s degree in Library Science required. Three or more years library experience using automated integrated library network, personal computers, electronic databases, and the internet required. This position calls for a high degree of initiative and ability to work independently and as a team. A genuine desire and ability to interact pleasantly, professionally, and effectively with the public and coworkers in a tactful manner is essential.

Knowledge and Skills:

  1. Excellent computer skills, with expertise in the use of Windows operating system and knowledge of Web-based technologies.
  2. Familiarity with integrated library systems, preferably Symphony.
  3. High degree of flexibility.
  4. Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  5. Good interpersonal skills, friendly manner, and strong service orientation.
  6. Knowledge of library policies and procedures, including automated circulation systems and information technology.
  7. Thorough knowledge of circulation department operations.

Ability to:

  1. Understand the Dewey Decimal System.
  2. Work in a busy customer service environment, multi-task, and frequently change focus while maintaining accuracy.
  3. Research information for a wide variety of library users.

Employee is frequently required to walk, stand, sit, talk, and hear; use hands to finger, handle, feel, or operate objects, tools, or controls, and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl and reach with hands and arms in physically picking up files, papers, and other common office objects. Employee must occasionally lift and/or move objects weighing up to 30 pounds such as files, books, supplies, etc. Ability to read small print and view/operate computer screens, office machines, computers, mobile devices and digital cameras.
