Position Overview: Reporting to the Child & Youth Coordinator, Child & Youth Fitness Instructors are responsible for delivering safe, fun and memorable fitness programs. As a member of the Recreation Services Department, a Child & Youth Instructor is responsible to plan and implement programs which provide meaningful and age-appropriate activities for children and youth in our community. The supervision and safety of participants is the number one priority. Customer service, safety, fitness and wellness is what it’s all about in this position! Your love of teaching, combined with your lively, friendly, and upbeat attitude will make members and guests thoroughly enjoy their time working out of Elevation Place. As a physically fit individual, you will be a positive role model and advocate for a healthy lifestyle.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Is generally knowledgeable about all Town of Canmore services.
  • Demonstrate correct exercise methods and proper use of exercise equipment.
  • Lead participants through exercise routines that are appropriate for the group’s age and development.
  • Plan routines and choose appropriate music.
  • Offer alternatives during classes to accommodate different levels of fitness, wellness, and ability.
  • Follows established standard operating procedures for safety and customer service.
  • Maintains confidentiality of all client information.

Education & Qualifications:

  • Post secondary education in a related field, and/or combination of education and relevant experience - preferred.
  • Certified as a Fitness Instructor Specialist (FIS) with Canfitpro or as a Group Exercise Specialty Leader with Alberta Fitness Leadership Certification (AFLCA) and/or Certified Yoga Instructor and/or Certified Pilates Instructor.
  • Current Standard First Aid and CPR Level C Certificate - required.

Experience:

  • Minimum of 1-year prior experience facilitating fitness and wellness classes - required.
  • Physically fit and well-coordinated - required.
  • Able to work independently with minimal supervision – required.
  • Strong verbal communication skills, ability to communicate effectively to children and colleagues - required.

Term & Salary: This is a position with no benefits, and the starting base rate is $21.16/hour (when applicable). The instructional rate starts at $45-$55/class based on experience. Opportunities for teaching regular classes or being a substitute are available.
