Job description

Sturgeon Public School Division is currently seeking two (2) Temporary Child and Youth Care Workers to provide a full range of support services for students. This position will be based out of various schools in the Division.

Sturgeon Public Schools are located throughout Sturgeon County north of the cities of Edmonton and St. Albert. We are a rural community and as such our staff would require a valid drivers license and reliable vehicle to access the various locations.

Reporting to the Director of Learning Services, the Child and Youth Care Workers will work directly with the teachers and educational assistants to support students in the classroom environment.

Skills And Abilities

  • Observe, assess and document student behaviours and safety needs
  • Monitor, support and participate in classroom activities
  • Teach and assist students in appropriate classroom and life skills
  • Provide assistance and encouragement with academics
  • Build trust and rapport with students through activities and personal interactions
  • Provide alternate ways to cope with developmental and situational problems
  • Intervene in crisis situations as necessary
  • Maintain a therapeutic approach to behaviour management
  • Collaborate with the classroom teacher in regards to problem solving and decision making
  • Keep informed of current professional trends in the field of child care
  • Participate and assist in facilitating school events and professional development learning

Education And Experience

  • A Bachelor Degree in Child and Youth Care or Social Work is preferred
  • A Diploma in Child and Youth Care may be considered
  • At least 2 years working experience in a related role
  • Knowledge of addiction and mental health
  • Familiar with the developmental, educational, emotional, social and recreational needs of children, youth and families
  • First Aid is an asset
  • Suicide Training and Indigenous Cultural Training is required
  • Therapeutic Crisis Intervention and Children and Residential Experience Training is required
  • A passion for outdoor education would be an asset

Sturgeon Public Schools offers a competitive salary range from $29.32 to $37.61 per hour based on experience and education as well as a comprehensive benefits package, as per the General Employment Conditions. Hours of work are 37.5 hrs/week, March 19, 2025 – June 30, 2025.
