Pay Range: $17.22 - $19.58
Position Overview
VHA's Child and Family Support Worker (CFSW) is responsible for providing child care and home support to families with children from birth to 4 years who are recovering from a medical and/or crisis situation. They provide emotional support and guidance to parents struggling with mental health issues (e.g., postpartum depression). The CFSW helps families with concrete childcare and home support activities, including light housekeeping and child care ADLs.
Key Areas of Accountability
- Provides care to children aged 0-4 years with all of their activities of daily living (ADLs).
- Provides physical and emotional support to parents recovering from medical health conditions in carrying out normal household routines or activities of daily living (such as light cleaning and laundry, child care).
- Provides food planning and preparation, if needed, ensuring that meals are nutritious and take into consideration special diets.
- Provides a range of activities in caring for infants, such as bathing, changing diapers, and infant stimulation.
- May be required to provide teaching and demonstration of caring activities to assist parents in learning to conduct these activities independently, encouraging them to do as much independently as possible.
- Provides teaching and mentoring to first-time parents in caring for newborns and/or special needs.
- Provides emotional support and guidance in caring for multiple newborns (e.g., establishing routines, schedules).
- Develops and plans educational and recreational activities that are age appropriate.
Required Qualifications
- 2 years’ experience in childcare and/or internationally trained experience.
- Certification in one of the following: Early Childhood Education Certificate/Diploma, Childcare Assistant, Mothercraft Childcare Certificate, PSW Certificate recognized by the Ministry of Colleges and Universities or Ministry of Education, or internationally trained Registered Nurses, Registered Practical Nurse, Midwife, or Physician.
- First Aid/CPR Certificate is an asset.
- At least 1 year of experience working in the community.
- Experience with mental health (e.g., postpartum depression) is an asset.
- Experience in developing educational and recreational activities that are age appropriate.
- Experience working with children with special needs (e.g., Autism).
- Experience in teaching/mentoring new parents.
- Experience in the preparation of nutritional meals is required.
