Job description

The Chief Financial Officer provides strategic leadership, oversight and direction in the management of financial accounts and controls for the organization in compliance with legal and regulatory requirements, accounting practices, and corporate policies and procedures.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Provide strategic leadership oversight and direction in the management of General Accounting, Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable, Materials Management, Purchasing and Payroll functions and processes
  • Provide advice and guidance to the executive team on such matters as accounting controls, financial processes for payments, accounting system access and controls; and resolve issues
  • Controlling and conserving the financial assets of the group of companies
  • Negotiate the terms of all financial lines of credit, mortgages and other financial tools
  • Consult with the CEO regarding strategic direction and the impact on short- and long-term capital and operating budgets
  • Prepare short- and long-term capital and operating budgets for approval by the CEO and Board of Directors
  • Ensure adequate financial resources are available to meet current obligations and future expansion as directed by the operating and capital budgets
  • Ensure the accounting group is organized to have the appropriate resources in order to make certain that timely, accurate and complete financial information is produced, distributed to the appropriate people, and followed up as necessary
  • Communicate financial information to the CEO and the Board on a regular basis
  • Have a sound working knowledge of the information system technology used by the company and make educated recommendations for upgrade, improvement and other changes
  • Ensure all on-site and head office systems, technology, accounting processes and related personnel meet the financial reporting and accountability requirements of the company
  • Assist in the financial planning and forecasting of various special projects

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelors degree in Business, Finance or Accounting (or equivalent)
  • Seasoned Chartered Professional Accounting (CPA) in good standing
  • Meaningful experience with Boards and committees combined with a sound understanding of their roles, issues and concerns
  • Minimum 5 years’ leading a financial team for a mid to large organization
  • Broad business knowledge and experience and understanding of organizational structure
  • Experience managing external relationships including but not limited to: banking, finance, insurance, information systems providers, external auditors
  • Experience in leading and directing the development of complex budgets corporately and across multiple business units.
  • Demonstrated success in a senior-level finance or accounting position, managing accounting systems, budgets, internal controls, business planning and asset management
  • Demonstrated results with strategic planning and execution, contracting, negotiating, and change management

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES

  • Demonstrated knowledge of finance, accounting, budgeting, and cost control principles including Generally Accepted Accounting Principles, automated financial and accounting reporting systems, best practices in internal controls, federal and provincial financial regulations
  • Proven ability to analyze financial data and prepare financial reports, statements, and projections
  • Strong ability to motivate teams to produce quality materials within tight timeframes and simultaneously manage several projects; a well-defined sense of diplomacy, including solid negotiation, conflict resolution, and people management skills
  • High level of proficiency with Microsoft Office productivity suite; advanced proficiency with accounting software and spreadsheet programs and applications
  • High level of integrity, confidentiality, and accountability; effective attention to detail and a high degree of accuracy.
  • Sound analytical thinking, planning, prioritization, and execution skills; ability to respond appropriately in pressure situations with a calm and steady demeanor.
  • Able to effectively communicate both verbally and in writing
  • Able to build and maintain lasting relationships with other departments, key business partners, and government agencies
