Venor is proud to partner with Nova Construction in their search for a Chief Financial Officer (CFO) to join their team! Based in Antigonish, Nova Scotia, Nova Construction is a driving force in the road building industry. Over the years, Nova has built, upgraded and/or paved more than 500 miles of highway in Newfoundland, New Brunswick and Nova Scotia for the provincial and federal governments. Nova Construction provides a wide range of commercial and residential services – from aggregate, asphalt, bridges and concrete, to earth moving and road building.

As CFO, you will be a pivotal force in shaping the financial health and strategic direction of Nova Construction. Leveraging your financial acumen and leadership abilities, you will drive growth, profitability, and operational excellence for the company. Your role is critical in guiding company financial management and helping to guide company initiatives that ensure Nova Construction’s continued success.

What You’ll Be Doing:

  1. Financial Reporting – Directly involved in the preparation, review, and presentation of financial statements in accordance with regulatory requirements and generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP). Ensure all financial statements are accurate, timely, and compliant with relevant laws and regulations governing financial reporting.
  2. Financial Planning and Analysis – Responsible for developing financial strategies, forecasts, and budgets to guide the company’s operations. This includes analyzing financial data to provide actionable insights for decision-making and long-term planning.
  3. Tax Planning, Compliance, and Preparation – Oversee and actively participate in the preparation and filing of corporate tax returns, ensuring accuracy and adherence to tax laws and regulations in all jurisdictions. Develop and implement tax strategies to minimize the company’s tax liabilities while maintaining full compliance. Ensure the company’s tax planning aligns with overall financial goals and supports long-term business objectives.
  4. Risk Management – Identify and assess financial risks facing the company, such as market, credit, and operational risks. Develop and implement strategies to mitigate these risks, safeguarding the company’s financial health.
  5. Treasury Management – Manage the company’s cash flow and liquidity, ensuring adequate funds are available for operating expenses and capital expenditures.
  6. Strategic Planning – Collaborate with other senior leaders to develop and execute the company’s strategic initiatives, expansion plans, and investment opportunities. Align financial goals with overall business objectives.
  7. Corporate Governance – Ensure compliance with corporate governance principles and best practices, including oversight of internal controls, risk management processes, and ethical standards. Maintain transparency and accountability in all financial practices.
  8. Leadership and Team Development – Provide leadership and guidance to the finance team, fostering a culture of collaboration, innovation, and continuous improvement. Develop and mentor talent to support the company’s financial objectives and ensure a high-performing finance function.

What We’re Looking For:

  1. Bachelor’s Degree in Finance, Accounting, Business Administration, or a related field.
  2. Minimum of 10-15 years of progressive experience in accounting, finance, or related roles, with at least 5-7 years in senior management and leadership positions.
  3. Extensive experience in financial reporting, analysis, and understanding of GAAP and regulatory compliance.
  4. Proven track record in entrepreneurial or high-growth companies.
  5. Strong strategic thinking, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
  6. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to influence and collaborate with other senior leaders.
  7. Experience in the construction industry and large projects is considered an asset.
  8. CPA designation and/or MBA preferred.
