JOB SUMMARY
Hydro Ottawa offers unique Conservation and Demand Management (CDM) advice and programs to its customer base as a cost effective and customer-centric way of helping customers reduce energy and manage electricity costs while meeting system needs and Government objectives. This specialized work requires employees who are focused on elevating the customer experience and driving more value in the areas of energy efficiency and the growing array of electricity generation alternatives and smarter grid technologies alongside traditional infrastructure planning.
The Energy Conservation Engineer (ECE) works closely with both internal stakeholders and Hydro Ottawa customers and has the strategic and technical expertise required to lead and support the technical aspects of Hydro Ottawa’s CDM Team objectives. The primary focus of this position is to drive results by targeting and engaging with C&I customers to help them unlock energy savings. The ECE has experience with building energy systems, and will assist customers in the identification and recommendation of potential energy efficiency equipment, technologies, and projects across customer facilities. The ECE will track and quantify savings as a result of these interactions, in support of achieving GWh and GW savings in accordance with our commitments. In addition, The ECE assists with educating customers on available programs and financial incentives and capturing customer insights to inform future CDM / Non-wire alternative (NWA) opportunities. They will also ensure CDM program delivery processes are executed in an effective, efficient manner in compliance with CDM program requirements.
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES
- Assist with the ongoing development, implementation, maintenance, improvement, monitoring, and reporting of an annual strategic CDM plan, including a tactical sales strategy that delivers on the achievement of CDM goals and objectives.
- Interact with customers to ascertain energy efficiency needs and business drivers. Capture and share intelligence with internal stakeholders to assist with developing strategies that strengthen market share or increase customer value.
- Engage with C & I customers to increase Hydro Ottawa’s reputation as a trusted energy adviser by :
- Providing expertise and support regarding their electricity use
- Reviewing a facility’s past energy study report as well as control systems, operating schedules, and maintenance practices in order to inform the engagement
- Performing assessments, including on site consultations where appropriate to identify, discuss, and evaluate potential simple energy saving opportunities, as well as those requiring more comprehensive third party evaluation
- Prioritizing and recommending energy-saving projects within assigned customer facilities and assisting with applications to Hydro Ottawa CDM initiatives which may include the preparation of business cases to justify capital expenditures
- Supporting the implementation of energy management projects that result in annual energy and peak demand savings from non-incented projects.
- Tracking the implementation of such projects, including the planning, budgeting, and scheduling for the design, installation, commissioning, and verification of energy efficiency projects within assigned customer facilities.
- Leading tracking and monitoring activities in those facilities that contribute towards CDM Team kWh and kW target obligations, preparing reports and projections as requested
- Coordinating necessary site inspections to confirm the various activities implemented for program reporting and compliance
- Create annual reports and verification of CDM Team efforts towards achieved savings, following International Performance Measurement and Verification Protocol where applicable
- Work with multidisciplinary teams (engineering, key accounts, asset planning, marketing and management) to design, develop, and deliver CDM / DER / NWA business cases, pilots, programs, and / or services, as well as contribute to advocacy work and the Hydro Ottawa cost of service application where necessary.
- Leverage internal data and metrics to identify and target potential customers for CDM team engagement.
- Track customer insights learned during engagement to inform the development of new CDM programs, Distributed Energy Resources (DER) or Non-Wired Alternatives (NWA), as well as future business opportunities
- Manage and use productivity tools to support sales efforts and identify efficiencies in CDM program delivery.
- Populate Customer Relationship Management (CRM) system with customer information and keep key account coordinators apprised of important insights
- Make presentations to internal and external stakeholders on CDM programs and activities
- Develop and cultivate industry and trade ally relationships to support CDM Team initiatives, through participation in industry associations, events and other appropriate channels
- Address or direct CDM customer issues to minimize brand risk and increase customer satisfaction while respecting governance and program compliance
- Ensure CDM program compliance and Hydro Ottawa regulatory and workplace obligations.
- Participate in applicable working groups and committees (IESO, NRCan, OEB), and collaborate with other LDCs on relevant projects, as required.
- Assist with preparing responses to internal and external audits
- Perform other related duties as required
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering from an accredited university in Electrical, Mechanical, Civil or Sustainable and Renewable Energy Engineering
- Be, or be able to become, a Professional Engineer licensed in the Province of Ontario
- Knowledge of energy efficient technologies
- Minimum 5 years’ experience in electricity utilization, energy management and building systems (i.e. : lighting, motors, building controls and HVAC systems)
- Knowledge of electrical metering, load profiling and analyzing electricity rate impacts
- Experience in site investigations, report writing, construction review, specification writing, and commissioning of building systems
- Advanced Energy Training considered an asset (CEM, CMVP or similar)
- Good understanding of the electric utility business
- Experience in business development or account management, proposal and report writing, and making presentations
- Project Management experience with an emphasis on managing multiple projects
- Experience with RETScreen or equivalent energy modeling software considered an asset
- Must have a valid G drivers’ license
- Strong computer skills, proficient in the use of Google suite of products specifically : Gmail, Docs, Slides, Drive, Sheets
- English essential, both oral and written; Bilingual (English / French) considered an asset
This is a management group opportunity and salary will be commensurate with qualifications.
