Position: Casual Child & Youth Counsellor

Location: HDSB Schools [Burlington, Halton Hills (Acton & Georgetown), Oakville, Milton]

Pay Rate: $60,413.00 - $71,593.00 per year as per the collective agreement

Salary step would be determined based on previous experience.

The Halton District School Board (HDSB) is one of the fastest growing school districts in Canada. Together, our 10,000+ staff serve more than 66,000 students in more than 100 schools in the communities of Burlington, Oakville, Milton, Georgetown and Halton Hills. We are seeking qualified Casual Child & Youth Counsellors (CYC) to be placed in the CYC casual pool. Individuals within this casual pool may be offered temporary, short-term employment up to 3 months in length to fill temporary vacancies during the absence of the regular incumbent.

Casual pool applicants who are successful in the interview and provide the board with a clear vulnerable sector check and a confirmation of their diploma/degree will be contacted when short-term and long-term temporary assignments become available. Once employed in a short-term or long-term temporary Child & Youth Counsellor position, casual CYC applicants will have priority consideration for long term occasional and permanent job opportunities as they are posted as per the PSSP Collective Agreement. For temporary long-term occasional (LTO) positions, longer than three months, a comprehensive Employee & Family Benefits plan applies to those in positions longer than 90 consecutive days.

Once an applicant is offered and accepts a short-term or long-term temporary position, they become employees of the HDSB. Successful casual pool applicants will be placed within the casual pool for a period of up to 2 years.

Position Summary:

The successful candidate will work in a variety of schools in one of three geographical areas or have school-based behaviour classroom or alternative education classroom responsibilities. Child and Youth Counsellors are members of a school-based resource team and provide consultation to school staff on the behavioural, social and emotional needs of students.

Responsibilities Will Include:

  1. Providing direct service to students in class-wide, small group or individual formats
  2. Engaging in the provision of professional development related to whole class, small group and individual learning
  3. Participating in multi-disciplinary School Resource Team meetings
  4. Providing educator consultation
  5. Providing suicide risk screening
  6. Delivering/facilitating professional development to educators and other Board staff as requested

Minimum Qualifications:

  1. A recognized Degree or Advanced Diploma in Child and Youth Care from an accredited institution or equivalent
  2. A commitment to anti-oppressive and anti-racism
  3. Strong interpersonal skills, and verbal communication skills
  4. Flexibility, patience, tolerance, enthusiasm, creativity and team-orientation
  5. Competence with Google Work Suite and electronic record keeping
  6. A commitment to ongoing learning
  7. Excellent judgment, organizational and time management skills
  8. Authentic, resilient, dependable, reliable and have the ability to problem solve effectively
  9. Adherence to a high level of professional and ethical standards
  10. Experience working in a fast-paced environment
  11. Knowledgeable of local community resources
  12. Reliable transportation and the ability to work at a variety of locations throughout the day

Preferred Qualifications:

  1. Experience working in a School Board setting
  2. Current registration in the Ontario Association of Child & Youth Care (OACYC) would be an asset
  3. Experience supporting individuals from a variety of lived experiences (socio-economic, cultural, etc.)
  4. Lived experience as a member of an equity-deserving group
  5. Broad understanding of and an inclusive approach to relationship building with diverse stakeholders in the community and in schools
  6. Experience and/or interest in providing skills training to post-secondary students

Appointments Are Conditional Upon:

  1. Provision of an original copy of a criminal background check with vulnerable sector screening dated within 6 months
  2. Agreement to comply with the Board's policies, procedures and code of conduct
