CASUAL RELIEF WORKER – AROLAND

Hourly Wage: $26.50

Position Overview:

Casual Relief Workers work with local Tikinagan staff to help families and children in the community. This position provides the opportunity to work flexible hours and gain experience. Casual Relief Workers also make a valuable contribution to the well-being of individual children or families and to the community as a whole. The work of Casual Relief Workers and all our staff are guided by our Mamow Obiki-ahwahsoowin Service Model – everyone working together to raise our children.

Duties may include, but are not limited to:

  • Transporting and/or supervising children in Tikinagan care to attend medical appointments, family visits, etc.
  • Mentoring children through recreational activities such as fishing, cooking, crafts, etc.
  • Providing assistance with community events or crisis response such as cooking, serving, or transportation.
  • Administrative tasks and other duties that may arise.

Qualifications Desired:

  • Interest in helping families and learning new skills. Experience with raising a family or working with children, being a part of community life in small remote communities.
  • Knowledge of and lived experience with the Aboriginal culture, including land-based activities, spiritual understanding, importance of Elders, etc. Familiarity with the community being served is required.
  • Ability to speak Ojibway or Ojicree is an asset.
  • Basic skills in verbal and written communication, and personal time management.
  • Ability to maintain strict confidentiality is required.
  • Good character with professional integrity and a positive role model.
  • High school diploma is preferred and post-secondary education is an asset.
  • A valid driver’s license is preferred.
  • Up-to-date First Aid certificate is an asset.
  • Should be willing and able to travel.

Because of the nature of our services, Tikinagan has to make sure that the children and families we serve are safe and that the staff we hire don’t pose any risks to clients. One of the measures we take is to have new staff provide a criminal background check. All successful applicants will require an application for, or a current, Criminal Record Check (CRC). A Vulnerable Sector Check (VSC) for those positions working with children will also be required. As such, it is recommended that applicants apply for a CRC & VSC as soon as possible.
