Job description

Under general supervision, the Cashier performs clerical work in collecting payments from customers.

Because the Authority has a responsibility to serve the public 24 hours a day, an employee in this class is expected to work overtime as conditions demand and on short notice during emergency conditions.

Responsibilities:

  • Receives cash payments from customers in partial and full payment of deposits, service fees, bills, invoices, and other fees.
  • Uses cash register and keys in amounts paid; makes change as necessary.
  • Receives and verifies check payments to ensure the correctness of the data, payee, payer, dollar amount, signature, and the amount written in words.
  • Accepts mail payments and payments dropped in the overnight depository, and records amount paid on cash register.
  • Clears cash register at the end of the day; totals stubs and receipts; counts cash and checks and compares total on cash register with currency in register to verify balances.
  • Prepares deposit slips and daily cash summary showing monies collected.
  • Accepts responsibility for shortages in cash collected.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Thorough knowledge of regulations, practices, and procedures applicable to the collection and depositing of revenues.
  • Ability to meet the character and reputation standards of a bonding company.
  • Ability to keep records of cash received and to prepare a variety of routine reports on such transactions.
  • Considerable knowledge of standard office practices and procedures.
  • High degree of initiative and dependability.
  • Some knowledge of the method and equipment used in data entry and computer utilization.
  • Ability to plan work and carry through to completion without close supervision.
  • Ability to use adding machines, copy machines, and computer terminals.
  • Ability to review documents to verify completeness and accuracy of information.
  • Ability to deal effectively with all persons contacted during the course of work.
  • Skill in counting money and recording transactions with speed and accuracy.
  • Skill in the operation of adding machines and other mechanical office aids.

High School diploma, or equivalent, including or supplemented by courses in commercial subjects and four (4) years of progressively responsible experience in public contact work, three (3) years of which must have involved collecting and accounting for large sums of money.
