The University of the Virgin Islands (UVI) is seeking a detail-oriented and highly organized Cash Accountant to join our finance team. The Cash Accountant will be responsible for managing the University’s cash accounts, ensuring accurate and timely recording of cash transactions, reconciling cash balances, preparing daily cash reports, and supporting the overall financial operations. This role is responsible for monthly reconciliations of all cash and investments accounts. The cash management accountant is to work in collaboration with all auxiliaries to ensure cash is recorded. This position plays a crucial role in maintaining the financial integrity of UVI by ensuring that all cash activities are documented and accounted for in accordance with institutional policies and accounting standards.
Required Qualifications
Education:
- Associate or Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field from an accredited institution.
Experience:
- Minimum of 2-3 years of experience in cash accounting, financial analysis, or a related field.
- Experience working in higher education accounting or in a non-profit environment is a plus.
- Must be proficient in creating and maintaining reconciliations.
- Strong understanding of cash accounting principles and practices.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, etc.) and accounting software.
- Excellent attention to detail, accuracy, and organizational skills.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
- Ability to work independently and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
- Effective communication skills, both written and verbal.
Preferred Qualifications
- Knowledge of governmental or educational accounting practices is a plus.
- Experience with Banner or similar enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems is a plus.
- Intermediate Excel Skills.

- Must be able to use a computer and common business software.
- Work may require occasional overnight travel.

Advertised Job Duties
- Monitor, track, and reconcile the University’s cash accounts (e.g., checking, savings, and investment accounts, including PCard and Corporate card accounts).
- Prepare daily, weekly, and monthly cash reports to ensure accurate cash flow monitoring.
- Reconcile cash receipts and disbursements with bank statements and internal records, ensuring accuracy and compliance with UVI policies.
- Investigate and resolve discrepancies related to cash transactions.
- Prepare and maintain accurate documentation for cash transactions, including deposit slips, cash receipts, and journal entries.
- Prepare journal entries to be approved for entry.
- Assist in the preparation of monthly, quarterly, and year-end financial reports related to cash balances and transactions.
- Provide information for audit and financial reviews related to cash activities.
- Ensure accurate recording of all cash receipts and disbursements in the accounting system.
- Process payments and cash receipts promptly, ensuring proper documentation and allocation.
- Assist with cash forecasting and liquidity planning to ensure sufficient funds are available to meet operational needs.
- Ensure that notification is sent to grant accounts to make sure invoicing is done by grant accountants for funds expended for grant projects.
- Maintain internal controls to safeguard University funds, ensuring compliance with financial policies and regulations.
- Ensure compliance with all applicable financial reporting standards and guidelines.
- Assist in preparing for and supporting audits by providing necessary documentation and explanations regarding cash activities.
- Work closely with other departments, such as student accounts, payroll, and procurement, to ensure accurate recording and reporting of all cash-related transactions.
- Provide support and guidance to departments regarding cash-related processes and procedures.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Senior Accountant or Accounting Manager.
