JOB PURPOSE
The Caseworker (Chaplain) provides supervision and support for clients/residents as required by The Salvation Army and funding contract policies and procedures, and provides Christian-based pastoral care services within a community, church, or a residential/shelter setting in keeping with approved pastoral care practices.
RESPONSIBILITIES
The incumbent is responsible for the following range of job duties characteristic or typical of the job class:
Caseworker Duties
- Demonstrate by word and action a positive and professional role model for residents and employees of Belkin House and contribute to the mission and goals of Belkin House.
- Monitor the environment and clients/residents to ensure safety and security; complete regular client/resident status checks and room searches as required.
- Develop and implement case management of assigned clients/residents; assist clients/residents in establishing goals, monitoring progress, and prepare discharge plans.
- Assess client suitability to the program and make referrals to other programs in our building and other agencies as required.
- Interview clients to prepare case histories and background information for which confidentiality is required.
- Perform intake and discharge procedures for clients/residents as assigned.
- Develop, with the client, a Personal Development Program (PDP) which will improve the client’s current situation and which the client can reasonably achieve and commit to.
- Orientate new residents to Belkin House’s policies and procedures.
- Maintain awareness of any problems (medical, behavioral, or other) experienced by clients. Report pertinent information to supervisor.
- Provide appropriate crisis intervention, basic counselling skills, and support as required.
- Monitor appropriate behavior; intervene in crisis situations, provide emotional support and advocacy as required.
- Distribute funds to residents in accordance with established guidelines.
- Engage in the development of inter-personal relationships that promote dignity and respect.
- Maintain appropriate records and statistics, ensure that all required documentation is accurate and complete, and forward all reports in a timely manner according to published guidelines.
- Attend and participate in meetings as required.
- Work with Manager to develop programs and procedures related to client care.
- Develop professionally through attendance at conferences, seminars, and other various training and/or educational courses.
- Liaise with Police, Funders, court personnel, community agencies, families, and other staff members.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Chaplaincy Duties
- Pray with and/or lead people to faith in Jesus Christ as opportunity permits.
- Plan and conduct creative worship services, pastoral care programs (including ongoing visitation and pastoral care), activities, outreach programs, and Bible studies for community members, clients, and/or congregants as applicable.
- Assist community members, clients, or congregants towards achieving personal and spiritual well-being.
- Work as a team member with other pastoral caregivers in problem-solving for the benefit of individuals; may act as a member of a case management team.
- Communicate in an empathetic and influential manner with clients, congregants, families, staff, and community agencies; maintain written records/logs of activities (including activity reports and statistical information).
- Recruit, interview, train, orient, document, and monitor all volunteers coordinating their involvement in program delivery.
- Refer community members and clients to representatives of other faith communities as needed.
- Know and act in accordance with security procedures of the facility to ensure safety and confidentiality of community members, clients, or congregants (e.g. contact with emergency response).
- May act in an intake capacity, admitting clients following standard criteria.
- May serve on Salvation Army Councils and Committees.
- Ensure that a proper Christian spiritual focus is applied to programs & initiatives.
- Ensure that the Gospel of Jesus Christ is exemplified in the performance of all job responsibilities and through personal example.
QUALIFICATIONS
Education
- Possess solid character, values, and lifestyle, and willing and able to affirm and support the Mission and Values Statements of The Salvation Army.
- The successful applicant will hold/have a diploma or degree in a related social services field.
- Some related Chaplaincy and/or pastoral ministry experience and education.
- Minimal education level attained includes at least two years of post-secondary education in social services or related field is preferred.
Experience
- One year, but less than three years of prior related experience, including frontline casework experience in a social services environment working with marginalized individuals in a social service counselling role.
Required Skills/Knowledge
- Demonstrated knowledge of and experience with theories, principles, and practices specifically in the human services field and issues including domestic violence/abuse, substance abuse, mental health, and homelessness issues is required. Ability to apply this knowledge in the identification and assessment of needs and in making appropriate recommendations.
OTHER CONDITIONS / REQUIREMENTS
- Successful obtainment of clearance through The Salvation Army Child Abuse Registry
- Successful obtainment of clearance through the Criminal Record Check under the Criminal Records Review Act
SALARY: Pay Band 4
TERMS: Permanent, Full-Time (40 hours/week)
DAYS & TIME: Monday to Friday (8:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.)
With one 30 mins. unpaid lunch break
