We are seeking an experienced and highly skilled Port Captain to join our Cargo Operations team. The ideal candidate will have extensive onboard experience as a Master Mariner or Chief Officer on Handysize or Supramax dry bulk ships. This role is crucial in ensuring the efficient and safe operation of our vessels in port, coordinating between the ship, owners, and commercial colleagues, and resolving operational issues.
Qualifications
- Extensive onboard experience as a Master Mariner or Chief Officer, preferably on Handysize or Supramax dry bulk ships.
- Strong knowledge of major Handysize ship operations procedures, including hold preparations, log loading and lashing, and hold cleaning chemicals.
- Familiar with requirements on typical handy trading cargoes, such as NOPAC logs, grains, steel and project cargos, mineral concentrates, and fertilizers.
- Proficiency in stowage and stability calculations as required by relevant authorities.
- Excellent communication skills, with the ability to resolve issues and coordinate diplomatically with various stakeholders.
- Ability to travel and provide on-site support as needed.
- Strong understanding of local regulations and industry practices.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team, with a proactive and problem-solving approach.
Job Scope
- Oversee vessel operations in port, ensuring compliance with procedures and standards.
- Coordinate hold preparations, log loading, and lashing.
- Ensure vessels meet cargo requirements and perform stowage and stability calculations.
- Enforce cargo handling equipment and hold inspection criteria.
- Resolve issues with ship masters and coordinate with local agents and stakeholders.
- Conduct inspections to ensure safety and efficiency.
- Build and maintain strong relationships with customers and longshoremen.
- Liaise between the ship, owners, and commercial colleagues.
- Ensure smooth communication and operations among regional offices.
- Stay updated on regulations and industry practices.
- Monitor new regulations and trends, adapting practices as needed.
- Provide training and support on operational and regulatory requirements.
- Travel to ports and vessels for on-site support and supervision.
- Visit customers and longshoremen to enhance operational efficiency.
- Handle urgent assignments and resolve operational issues promptly.
