Position Overview

As the Senior Business Intelligence (BI) Data Strategist, you will be responsible for empowering the organization with sustainable cost-effective tools for rapid data discovery and promoting advanced data analytics. You will also accommodate the demand for BI solutions and provide support and maintenance of existing products. Primary duties include:

  • Facilitate sessions and work with Calgary Police Service (CPS) subject matter experts (SMEs) and external agencies to understand and analyze business requirements.
  • Design and create the blueprint for the information architecture that includes the evolving of the enterprise data model. Advise on data model development and integrate the models and information created into the information architecture.
  • Develop and maintain data artifacts such as data dictionaries, business glossaries, data mapping and data classification.
  • Maintain existing solutions as well as create new BI solutions.
  • Mentor, guide and provide technical expertise in the areas of data analytics, integration tools, technologies and methodologies. Train new and current data consumers around data solutions used at CPS.
  • Establish and lead a Community of Practice for BI solutions.
  • Research emerging platforms and tools, establish best practices and implement technologies.
  • Participate in the development of Data Governance and promote effective Information Management practices to improve CPS information and to mitigate operational and corporate risks by maintaining the Data Asset Catalogue (DAC).
  • Assess data structure changes to operational software systems and communicate changes and impacts to current data models.

Qualifications

  • A degree in Data Analytics, Computer Science, Software Engineering or a related field and a minimum of 8 years experience in Data Analysis and development of BI products.
  • Previous experience with large-scale data modeling, data visualization using Power BI (PBI) and modern data manipulation techniques, cloud and on-prem databases and data lake is required.
  • Strong working knowledge of Python, DAX, M-Code and database languages such as T-SQL, PL/SQL is also required.
  • Proficiency with MS Fabric, ArcGIS, FME (Feature Manipulation Engine), MS Power Platform, MS SharePoint, MS OneDrive and PowerShell are considered strong assets.
  • Experience with administering Microsoft PBI and creating and maintaining data models such as Kimball Dimensional Modelling is also an asset.
  • Knowledge in Machine Learning, Artificial Intelligence and delivery of Geographic Information System (GIS) services is preferred.
  • Success in this position requires coaching and development, efficiency and thoroughness, planning and prioritizing/visionary, self-confidence, effective communication with a service orientation and the ability to build strong relationships.
