Under the direction of the Manager, Small Business, Entrepreneurship and Innovation, the Business and Entrepreneurship Consultant will develop and implement programs and services to support early stage and growing businesses in Mississauga aligned with City and Department strategic objectives. A key objective of the position is to help the successful development of local small-medium sized businesses and entrepreneurs, working directly with clients at various stages in the business cycle, developing and delivering relevant programs, services and tools, supporting digital marketing, building business relationships, and client follow-up to measure local economic impact, interpret, and report results.

Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Contribute to all programs and services delivered by IDEA and the Mississauga Business Entrepreneur Centre (MBEC) with emphasis on planning and delivering one-on-one and group consulting, training, mentoring, seminars, workshops, and events on a vast array of current and relevant business topics.
  2. Provide direct client guidance and information to clients via walk-in, email, telephone, and web, and entrepreneurship programs.
  3. Review and analyze business plans to provide client feedback in a clear and constructive manner acceptable to the Corporation.
  4. Provide guidance on the implementation of digital marketing tools for businesses.
  5. Conceptualize, develop, and deliver enhanced small business seminars, events, and training; develop new and timely services and programs including mentor, speaker, and subject matter experts programming from pre-start-up to established businesses.
  6. Develop and maintain business tools, resources, and information including content development for information handouts, articles, newsletters, and blogs.
  7. Maintain client records through dedicated Customer Relationship Management (CRM), with emphasis on monitoring, follow-up, and reporting of economic impact of client interactions.
  8. Conduct ongoing business environmental scans, review and analysis of entrepreneurship trends, challenges, issues, and opportunities.
  9. Review legislation, licensing, and regulations pertaining to small business.
  10. Analyze, identify, share, and contribute to team and community resource knowledge and development.
  11. Build partnerships and strategic alliances with key community organizations and government to foster relationships and collaborative programs and services.
  12. Create awareness and represent MBEC within the community through presentations and networking with community groups and participation in relevant committees, associations, and events.
  13. Additional support for City-wide projects that impact business, and contribution to special projects will be required.
  14. Occasional travel may be required to conduct site visits with business clients, attend meetings and/or events in the Mississauga area and Greater Toronto Area. A valid driver's license and access to a vehicle is an asset.
  15. Some evening and weekend hours may be required.
  16. Other duties as assigned.

Skills and Qualifications

  1. University degree in Business or Entrepreneurship.
  2. Minimum of 5 to 7 years small-medium business consulting and coaching experience.
  3. Experience in development and delivery of training seminars, webinars, programs, and events on a variety of business-related topics for new and expanding small businesses in person and with virtual platforms (ex: MS Teams, Zoom, Webex).
  4. Excellent knowledge of social media platforms and digital sales tools for business.
  5. Strong skills and experience in digital marketing, financial, and business plan development for small businesses.
  6. Ability to review, analyze, and assess business plans and concepts to provide feedback to clients in a clear and constructive manner.
  7. Ability to develop business tools and resources to support client programs and services.
  8. Solid understanding of key innovative business and entrepreneurship trends, issues, and challenges.
  9. Experience in conducting research and analysis of business information, with ability to identify issues and recommend strategic solutions.
  10. Strong knowledge of business transactional analysis and report writing is required.
  11. Must be results-oriented team player with strong professional business acumen and diplomacy.
  12. Exceptional oral and written communication and presentation skills.
  13. Solid time management, customer service, interpersonal, and organizational skills.
  14. Understanding of government programs/services, starting, managing, or owning a business are definite assets.
  15. Proficiency in a digital environment and current/relevant technology tools.

Hourly Rate/Salary: $76,313.00 - $101,753.00
