We are a non-profit organization run by a local board of Directors funded by Legal Aid Ontario. We provide legal advice and representation for a variety of income-related and poverty law issues, in both English and French. Are you passionate about increasing access to justice for tenants in Northern Ontario? Our clinic is seeking a full time bilingual lawyer to fill an exciting new position: Tenant Protection Lawyer.

The successful candidate will lead the establishment of this new program in Northern Ontario, which is specifically aimed at expanding duty counsel services for tenants, and providing public legal education in Northern Ontario on tenants’ rights. This position will be based in our clinic but will be a collaborative effort of all 11 Northern Ontario community legal clinics including Sudbury, Thunder Bay, Algoma, Northwest, Moosonee, North Bay, Timmins, Kapuskasing, Elliot Lake, Lake Country, and Manitoulin.

Qualifications:

1. Member in good standing of the Law Society of Ontario as of the commencement date.
2. Commitment to social justice issues and to working within a client-centered and trauma-informed framework.
3. Commitment to reconciliation between indigenous and settler communities and to treating indigenous persons with respect and as equals.
4. Strong research, writing, and advocacy skills.
5. Strong analytical, organizational and time management skills.
6. Ability to work effectively as part of a team.
7. Strong ability to handle multiple priorities in a high-volume environment.
8. Ability to use digital tools to offer tenant webinars.
9. Community legal clinic experience is an asset.
10. Ability to work under little supervision while managing sensitive community needs.
11. Ability to write and communicate in both English and French.
12. Valid driver’s license and ability to travel throughout Northern Ontario (by plane, train and automobile).

Assets:

1. Familiarity with Northern Ontario.
2. Knowledge of administrative law and the Residential Tenancies Act.
3. Experience appearing before the Landlord and Tenant Board, administrative tribunals, or courts.

Responsibilities:

1. Summary legal advice by appointment over the telephone, virtually or in-person to tenants.
2. Preparation of statistical and other reports as required.
3. Brief services such as support in the completion of tenant applications by telephone, virtually, or in person.
4. Representation on tenant applications where appropriate.
5. Delivery of tenant duty counsel services for tenant applications.
6. Webinars on tenants’ rights, maintenance, tenant applications, tenant associations, and self-advocacy at the LTB.
7. In-person workshops and direct client services to assist tenants’ with the completion of tenant applications.

The salary range is $80,000-$110,000.00 per year, depending on experience, and includes a generous vacation entitlement, paid sick days, and after three months, group health and dental benefits and RRSP contributions.

The target start date of this position is as soon as possible, but start date can be flexible.
