POSITION SUMMARY:

Reporting to the Director Credit and Portfolio Management, the National Underwriter’s role is to make credit decisions on residential mortgage applications within the Bank’s credit policies and guidelines and regulatory guidelines (B20). The National Underwriter coordinates with various people; internal (mortgage coordinators, sales team) and external (appraisers) requesting additional information to assess and structure the mortgage and credit decision ensuring HomeEquity Bank’s standards are adhered. These standards contribute to the high quality of HomeEquity Bank’s mortgage portfolio.

The incumbent will possess excellent oral and written communication skills to present moderately complex concepts, make recommendations, discuss and explain underwriting decisions to management and internal sales partners.

Our ideal candidate is results oriented with a good understanding of the real estate market; and has superior organizational and analytical abilities to understand real estate market trends, demographics and industry lending practices.

MAJOR ELEMENTS OF THE ROLE:

  • Adjudicate mortgage applications within established authority limits and in accordance to the Bank’s Underwriting Policy, Guidelines & Procedures and ensure due diligence is applied in all instances including full reviews of appraisals and title searches in a timely, efficient and accurate manner.
  • Establish and maintain a positive relationship with the Internal Sales teams.
  • Prepare and issue mortgage commitments with appropriate conditions.
  • Escalate any credit exceptions to Team Lead and/or Management that are outside of the established authority limits.
  • Interact with internal business partners for the collection and follow up of all required documents to satisfy the mortgage commitment conditions when required.
  • Review and verify the accuracy of all required documents using sound due diligence and in compliance with internal policies and regulatory guidelines.
  • Document clear and complete credit decision notes within the Bank’s system.
  • Adhere to the Bank’s established Service Level Agreement (SLA).
  • Escalate any suspicious transactions to Management, the CRO and/or the CAMLO.
  • Miscellaneous duties and projects as assigned.

SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:

  • University Degree or Community College Diploma.
  • 3+ years of mortgage underwriting experience is required, preferably at a Canadian financial institution.
  • Excellent problem-solving and analytical skills.
  • Strong attention to detail.
  • Ability to manage and resolve conflict.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills; in both French and English.
  • Ability to work independently and within a team environment.
  • Well organized and effective time management.
