You will work as an anaesthetic nurse or operating department practitioner, caring for patients throughout their peri-operative journey. The post holder will work closely with the anaesthetic team caring for patients before, during and post anaesthesia.

The post holder will also be able to work with patients both in the scrub area and in the recovery room, utilising the skills they have in all areas.

Main duties of the job

Working closely with the multidisciplinary team in theatres, including pre-assessment, day surgery and recovery, to ensure patients have a safe journey throughout the perioperative process. The role encompasses the entire role of the operating department practitioner, theatre nurse from admission through to discharge.

Job responsibilities

  1. Implement basic nursing healthcare independently.
  2. Implement new/complex care with supervision.
  3. Practise in own clinical area of practice to agreed competency level.
  4. Ensure the use of safe techniques when moving and handling patients and equipment.
  5. Implement research-based practice as required.
  6. Participate with the multi-disciplinary team in decision making regarding patient care.
  7. Accurately document care and evaluate.
  8. Recognise potential clinical challenges and ways of dealing with them.
  9. Work as circulating and scrub nurse in all surgical specialties within the unit.
  10. Participate in shift patterns including weekdays, weekends and unsocial hours.
  11. Work with nursing and medical teams to provide a safe environment for the patient undergoing day surgery procedures, including checking and maintenance of equipment.
  12. Participate in achieving, monitoring and maintaining set standards of care ensuring safe practice and reporting if these standards fall below an acceptable level.
  13. Assist in proposing and implementing change.
  14. Ensure that due regard is given to customs, values and beliefs of all patients.
  15. When assessed as competent, give IV and Oral Medication.
  16. Be competent to manage a list from admission to discharge for any specialty within departmental guidelines.
  17. Utilise resources appropriately to ensure agreed standard of patient care.
  18. Delegate suitable clinical care to junior staff.
  19. Develop preceptorship skills and actively support peers.
  20. Develop supervisory skills.
  21. Participate in the development of local policies and procedures.
  22. Participate in nursing/departmental audit and quality initiatives.
  23. Have a basic understanding of resource management.
  24. Identify learning opportunities to achieve safe effective nursing practice.
  25. Contribute to the education and training of others, gaining an understanding of clinical supervision.
  26. Actively promote evidence-based practice within the clinical area and contribute to audit initiatives.
  27. Participate in the multi-disciplinary decision making process regarding changes in patient care and order of operating lists.
  28. Communicate work priorities for a given period to junior colleagues.
  29. Demonstrate awareness of others' emotional, physical and psychological situations and respond sensitively.
  30. Report to Team Leader accidents, incidents and complaints.
  31. Communicate effectively with patients and colleagues and facilitate a question and answer dialogue with patients and relatives.
  32. Communicate nursing interventions to relatives and carers with rationale and be able to demonstrate listening skills and the use of non-verbal cues.
  33. Evaluate written information and documentation.
  34. Actively contribute to team discussions.

Experience

Essential

  • Newly qualified or six months post-registration experience.
  • Up to date clinical knowledge.
  • Reflective practice.
  • Possession of a current Professional Portfolio.
  • Experience in an acute setting.

Desirable

  • Evidence-based practice and/or research skills.

Skills

Essential

  • Excellent written and verbal communication.
  • Good IT skills.
  • Good interpersonal skills.

Desirable

  • Participates in research and audit.
  • Patient Electronic Record experience.

Qualifications

Essential

  • HPC registered.
  • NMC registered.

Desirable

  • ODP training.
  • Anaesthetic certificate.
