This Opportunity

The Edmonton office of Smith + Andersen is currently seeking an Associate Principal for our Electrical Department, qualified in project engineering of building services. You are a strong leader who builds relationships with colleagues and clients, and your knowledge of electrical engineering makes you the go-to on a project team. You can juggle multiple projects and priorities while pushing the electrical team to realize their potential.

What You'll Do:

Business Planning & Development

  • Demonstrates a key role in developing and sustaining the vision of the partnership.
  • Actively participates in setting goals, long-term planning, and developing vision.
  • Shows initiative to assess business practices holistically.
  • Participates in the operation of the business, ensuring profitability is paramount.
  • Promotes all disciplines and services.
  • Involved in managing the operation of the firm, including attending meetings and events.
  • Leads the firm into new areas, markets, and technologies.
  • Attends industry functions to be a recognized member of the community.
  • Involved in marketing, promotion, and ad sales, including client liaison and proposal preparation.

Project Management

  • Involved in project management, overseeing profitability, project assignments, and staffing.
  • Ensures compliance with quality control projects.
  • Reviews projects for Professional Engineer documentation compliance.

Leadership/People Management

  • Considered a leader in the office and community.
  • Involved in hiring strategies, interviewing candidates, and conducting performance reviews.

Who You Are:

  • Minimum 10 years of project engineering experience in Electrical building services.
  • P. Eng. license or professional designation in Alberta preferred.
  • Strong leadership qualities and ability to work independently and direct a team.
  • Experience in complex environments with multiple projects and clients.
  • Excellent communication skills demonstrated through client and staff relations.
  • Experience coordinating major projects with other consultants and contractors.
  • Thorough understanding of provincial building code, electrical code, and relevant standards.
  • Strong sense of urgency and ability to prioritize tasks.
  • Excellent problem-solving and decision-making skills.
  • LEED certification or experience with sustainable design is an asset.
  • Experience contacting clients for future work and preparing proposals.
