Role Overview

In this role (reporting to the SVP, Regulatory), you will lead the goals and priorities of CPA Alberta’s Tribunals office (and the 3 staff within) while managing and providing the delivery of legal and practical advice for all matters relating to CPA Alberta’s Complaints Inquiry Committee (CIC). This includes representing the CIC before the Discipline Tribunal, Appeal Tribunal, and Court of Appeal of Alberta proceedings and applications for judicial review relating to CPA Alberta’s disciplinary processes. You will also provide corporate risk management by way of legal support and assistance to internal departments as directed by the SVP Regulatory.

CPA Alberta has offices in Edmonton and Calgary and provides hybrid Telecommuting opportunities (working from home a maximum of 3 days a week).

What you bring

  • LLB/JD member in good standing with the Law Society of Alberta and licensed to practice law in Alberta.
  • Litigation or administrative law experience.
  • People management or supervisory experience, including staff hiring, supervision, development and training; and team leadership.
  • Experience in the disciplinary process of self-regulating professions is preferred.
  • Broad legal knowledge with an emphasis on administrative law, privacy, insurance and/or risk management.
  • Demonstrated ability to prepare well-written, comprehensive communications including opinions and briefs.
  • Ability to assume independent carriage of complaint files.
  • Strong advocacy skills, both oral and written.
  • Identification and reconciliation of competing priorities, activities, and assignments.

What you will be doing

Work with:

  • The Director, Conduct and Discipline to ensure that CPA Alberta's obligations under the Chartered Professional Accountants Act (the Act), Regulations, Rules of Professional Conduct and other governing documents are fulfilled in a compliant, consistent, transparent and fair manner.
  • The Complaints Inquiry Counsel to ensure effective and efficient handling of prosecutions and appeals to which the Complaints Inquiry Committee (CIC) is a party.
  • The Tribunal Secretary to ensure effective and efficient administration of Discipline Tribunal and Appeal Tribunal proceedings.
  • The Director, Corporate Strategy & Risk on matters of organizational risk management.
  • Liaise with other professional regulatory organizations, including those to be governed under the Professional Governance Act, on matters relating to hearings, including helping provincial regulatory organizations with limited resources.
  • Lead and support the Tribunals area through the setting of clear goals, policies and strategies that are consistent with the regulatory framework and organizational initiatives.
  • Actively participate on the Extended Management Team of CPA Alberta.

Working Specifications

  • Occasional travel between Edmonton and Calgary for hearings and CIC meetings, as well as other localities within Alberta from time to time as required.
  • Participation in lengthy proceedings/meetings as required.
  • Occasional work outside of regular working hours may be required.
  • This position can be in either Calgary or Edmonton.
