The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) maintains the security, reputation, and integrity of Alberta Registries and the Registry Agent Network, conducting investigations in relation to suspected or actual violations of provincial statutes, the Criminal Code of Canada, Ministry policies and procedures, and provisions of Ministerial Agreements. Key stakeholders include law enforcement agencies (local and federal), Alberta Justice and Alberta Public Safety & Emergency Services, Motor Vehicle Administration, Alberta Transportation and Alberta Registry Agents.

The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) Assistant Investigator is an entry-level investigator position. Investigations assigned directly to you will generally be a lower level of complexity. You may also work in a team led by more senior investigators who are conducting complex investigations completing assigned investigative tasks.

This position deals directly with clients and stakeholders and actively works as an Alberta Peace Officer to investigate files, interview witnesses and suspects and, when applicable, lay charges under provincial statutes or the Criminal Code of Canada. This position supports Assistant and Senior Investigators and SIU management.

Additional responsibilities include:

  • Ability to complete Alberta Peace Officer Investigator training and be eligible to obtain a Peace Officer appointment.
  • Liaising with law enforcement agencies, and municipal, provincial and federal government agencies.
  • Responding to inquiries from the public and Service Alberta stakeholders.
  • Creating investigative files in the SIU case management system.
  • Investigating files to conclusion and taking appropriate action in accordance with unit policy and procedures, Provincial Statutes of Alberta and the Criminal Code of Canada.
  • Producing analytical reports and briefing notes as required for the Minister, the Director or Assistant Director of SIU.
  • Have a working knowledge of fraud related sections of the Criminal Code of Canada, the Canada Evidence Act, and all provincial legislation that apply to the SIU Peace Officer authorization.
  • Knowledge and training in conducting investigations, gathering evidence, service of legal documents and report writing.

This position is required to act as a resource and provide training assistance to SIU personnel and will act as a resource for investigators, both within SIU and within other GoA investigative units. This investigator position contributes to the unit's mandate of ensuring that the registry agent network maintains the security of all personal information contained in registries databases.

The Ideal candidate is expected to have:

  • Experience working within Motor vehicle database (MOVES).
  • Excellent organizational, time management skills and ability to pay attention to details and communicate details both written and verbally.
  • Excellent negotiation, judgement, and conflict resolution.
  • Good knowledge of Microsoft Suite program and functions including word, outlook and excel.
  • Ability to learn computer applications such as corporate registry, motor vehicle systems and others for data base searches, records management.
