An exciting leadership opportunity exists on Unit 8-1B, at Alberta Hospital Edmonton. Longer term rehabilitation for patients with complex mental health needs and mild to moderate intellectual disability is the target population for Unit 8-1B. Reporting to the Unit Manager, we are currently seeking an Assistant Head Nurse who will provide leadership of the nursing program ensuring all components are aligned with the unit and zone operational plan, goals and initiatives. The AHN fosters team effectiveness, demonstrating excellent interpersonal and leadership skills, communicating effectively and seeking to resolve staff issues. The AHN develops a supportive environment for multidisciplinary learning. Duties include planning and organizing day-to-day operations, coordination and monitoring of unit activities, supporting the supervision of nursing and support staff and assisting with recruitment. The Assistant Head Nurse also performs nursing duties on the unit as needed and oversees patient admission and discharge planning in collaboration with the Unit Psychiatrist. This position acts as a liaison between multiple disciplines on Unit 8-1B, psychiatry, and relevant internal and external stakeholders.
Description:As an Assistant Head Nurse, you will be responsible for staff assignments, patient flow and acting as a role model, clinical resource and advocate for nursing staff. In addition to providing frontline nursing care, as required, you will take a leadership role in the promotion of quality patient care and the implementation of operational priorities. Your in-depth knowledge and skills, advanced judgment and clinical experience, will assist in providing solutions for complex health care issues at all levels with patients, interprofessional teams, administrators and policy makers. You will play a key role in providing safe, quality patient and family centered care while reflecting the shared vision and values of AHS.
Completion of an accredited nursing education program. Active or eligible for registration and practice permit with the College of Registered Nurses of Alberta (CRNA). Current Basic Cardiac Life Support - Health Care Provider (BCLS-HCP). Additional Required Qualifications:Minimum 5 years of psychiatric nursing practice within an acute, inpatient setting is required with at least two years of progressive nursing leadership experience. Working knowledge of relevant legislation is required, including the Alberta Mental Health Act, Public Health Act and the Health Information Act. Ability to function independently, as well as on a team. Ability to organize time and resources effectively; Demonstrates sound problem solving and decision-making skills. High level of initiative and accountability; Evidence of ability to make sound judgements; Evidence of strong communication and interpersonal skills. BLS
Preferred Qualifications:Baccalaureate Degree in Nursing preferred or equivalent experience. Preference given to candidates with experience in Adult Addiction/ Mental Health nursing role.
