About The Role
We are hiring a dedicated, hardworking Assistant Director, Summer Day Camp, to support the operation of our Summer Day Camps at 9 sites: two within our association at the Community YMCA and John W. Lindsay, and seven external sites throughout Halifax, Bedford, Dartmouth, Sackville and Cole Harbour. The Assistant Director will support the Director in oversight of these locations, along with staff training, administrative tasks, parent communication, promotion and marketing, problem solving and more.
In This Role, You Will
- Work with the Director, Day Camps on hiring, onboarding, scheduling and performance evaluation for a team of 40+ staff at multiple sites around HRM. Ensure staff provide the quality care and engaging programming that the YMCA promises its families. Collaborate with all camp staff to create a positive and inclusive camp environment. Demonstrate positive behaviour and attitudes for campers and other staff, acting as a role model for appropriate conduct and childcare best practices.
- Communicate with families and guide them through the registration and financial assistance processes, and again to help prepare for the camp experience. Promote camp registration and financial assistance at various sites throughout HRM.
- Help purchase, organize and deliver necessary materials to day camp locations throughout HRM to ensure the continued delivery of quality programming.
- In collaboration with the Director and Site Leads, develop a catalogue of engaging activities to be led by day camp staff. Ensure programming is engaging, age appropriate and risk is minimized.
- Maintain open day-to-day communication with designated camp sites. Discuss situations and solutions with the Director, Day Camp when appropriate. Connect with YMCA parents and families to ensure day camps programming meets their needs and expectations.
- Enforce camp safety rules and procedures, including first aid and emergency response protocols. Be prepared to respond quickly to situations at multiple sites throughout HRM.
- Identify potential improvements to camp and work with the team to implement them.
- Foster an environment that promotes diversity, equity and inclusion and respect among all YMCA staff and participants.
- Bring a caring, understanding attitude to work each day.
Education And Skills Qualifications
- High School diploma, or equivalent combination of education and experience, with a strong character reference
- 5+ years experience working with children and youth. Prior experience in a supervisory role.
- Cross-cultural communication skills to work with youth, parents, and staff
- Ability to meet multiple, competing deadlines and priorities
- Access to a reliable vehicle
- Strong attention to detail
- Excellent verbal, written, and presentation/workshop facilitation skills
- Strong interpersonal skills
