As one of Canada’s premier advocacy organizations, we are seeking an accomplished, results-oriented leader to join our team as the Assistant Director, Accounting.

Reporting to the Chief Financial Officer (CFO), you will be responsible for financial control and integrity of all Universities Canada financial information, oversee the daily accounting functions which includes payables, receivables and banking for Universities Canada and outside groups and ensures optimal utilization of the unit’s resources in the delivery of these services. You will also be responsible for annual filings, such as tax reporting, charity returns, etc.

Your responsibilities:

  • Ensure accurate records of revenues, expenditures, assets, and liabilities of the organization;
  • Review accounts payables, accounts receivables and bank transactions to ensure completeness, accuracy of coding, approvals, and postings to ledger;
  • Provide guidance on non-routine accounting transactions, review internal controls, workflow, processes and develop more efficient systems of work;
  • Work with internal and external groups to review monthly operating statements, prepare financial year end statements, troubleshoot and correct errors;
  • Ensure adherence to reporting deadlines and provide updates on financial performance as required;
  • Stay up to date with relevant regulations and legislation in the federal, provincial, and municipal landscapes and ensure organization compliance with same;
  • Plan, implement and oversee the organization’s financial year end audit, schedule and associated documentation.

The ideal person for this role is/has:

  • A strategic professional with five (5) or more years of progressive experience in accounting or finance; including experience managing teams;
  • A graduate degree with a specialization in business or finance;
  • A professional accounting designation such as CPA (CA, CGA or CMA) is required;
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Dynamics Great Plains or experience in financial systems is an asset.

Your skills and abilities include:

  • High degree of organization, professionalism, judgement and initiative;
  • Exceptional interpersonal, oral and written communication skills in English and French;
  • Ability to multitask, coach and guide staff;
  • Ability to learn and use various financial databases effectively;
  • Ability to understand and apply contract provisions;
  • Proficiency in the use of MS office suite including MS Excel, MS Word and MS PowerPoint;
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment with competing deadlines.

The position is based in Ottawa. Universities Canada has adopted a hybrid work model where employees are expected to work in the office a minimum of two days per week.

The hiring salary range for this position starts at $104,992 depending on experience. Candidates who do not meet all of the position requirements may be considered in an underfill capacity, in which case the candidate would be hired at a lower level than the position level.
