Department: Legislative and Legal Services
Position Type: Full-time (35 hrs./week)
Location: Essex, Ontario
Posting #: COE-17-25
Opening Date: April 16, 2025
Closing Date: May 14, 2025, at 5:00 PM

Who we are:

The Corporation of the County of Essex (the “County”) is an upper-tier municipal government serving approximately 193,000 residents and delivering shared services to over 422,000 in the Essex County/Windsor Region including maintaining County roads and active transportation networks, land ambulance services (Essex-Windsor EMS), libraries, planning services, long term care (Sun Parlor Home), community services (Housing with Supports), and emergency preparedness.

Student Experience:

The County is looking for an Articling Student to work in the Legislative and Legal Services Department during the 2026/2027 articling term. As an Articling Student at the County, you will be part of a close-knit team, including the Deputy County Solicitor and the Director of Legal Services/County Solicitor, responsible for supporting the County’s strategic priorities, operational needs, and ensuring ongoing legal compliance.

Instead of being placed in a formal rotation, you will work on a variety of files simultaneously and have the opportunity to express interest in several areas, including municipal and planning law, real estate law (including expropriations), corporate and commercial law, labour and employment law, and civil litigation. Articling students are engaged in a wide range of activities such as researching complex legal issues; drafting contracts, by-laws, policies, pleadings, and legal opinions; assisting with real estate transactions, preparing for court attendances, mediations, and arbitrations; and attending court and tribunal matters with County or external lawyers.

This is a unique opportunity to launch your legal career in a collaborative, dynamic and purpose-driven environment, while gaining hands-on experience with legal issues affecting your community. Articling Students will also find competitive salary and benefits, free parking, paid vacation and sick days, formal and informal feedback, and mentorship opportunities.

What You Bring:

Articling students are required to have a Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.) or Juris Doctor (J.D.) from an accredited Canadian law school before the start of their employment, and will be expected to have strong legal research, writing and communication skills; analytical and problem-solving abilities; the ability to work professionally in independent and team settings; and familiarity with legal research platforms and Microsoft Office.

The Application:

Your application should be directed to Claire Bebbington, Deputy County Solicitor, and it should include a cover letter, resume, unofficial law school transcripts, and a list of upper-year courses. Letters of reference are optional. Please submit your application online at the Career Opportunities section of our website at www.countyofessex.ca by May 14, 2025, at 5:00 PM. If selected, you will be contacted by our HR team to participate in our hiring process.
