Apprentice Plumber

Black & McDonald is currently seeking an Apprentice Plumber to join our Construction Division! If you are a hands-on, customer service-oriented, and technically inclined professional searching for the opportunity to build a solid foundation for your career, this position is for you. The Apprentice Plumber position is located in the Lower Mainland, BC and will report directly to the Construction Supervisor.

The successful candidate should be able to demonstrate a strong work ethic, willingness to learn, a great attitude, and a genuine passion for the trade. Apprentice Plumbers are required to be trained in all manner of pipe joining methods; comfortable with the use of common industry specific hand tools, power tools, and diagnostic tools; and adept at reading and interpreting technical literature. Day to day work may sometimes require long hours and lifting heavy loads.

Duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:

1. Assisting Journeymen and Master Plumbers: Working under the guidance of experienced plumbers to learn techniques, codes, and standards. This might involve observing their work, asking questions, and receiving feedback.
2. Learning Installation Techniques: Helping with the installation of plumbing systems including pipes, fittings, fixtures, and appliances. You’ll learn to use tools and equipment effectively while gaining hands-on experience.
3. Cutting and Fitting Pipes: Assisting in cutting and fitting pipes and tubing to the correct dimensions. This involves measuring, marking, and joining pipes using various methods such as soldering or threading.
4. Preparing Materials: Gathering and preparing materials and tools needed for plumbing tasks. This includes cleaning and organizing tools, and ensuring that the work area is safe and efficient.
5. Under the direction of the site foreman: move/haul material, pull water lines, fire caulking, thread pipe and assist with any other tasks required.
6. Second year apprentices will independently: thread pipe, install laundry boxes, with supervision: begin drainage, soldering, assembling tub valves and assist with any other tasks required.
7. Perform other duties as required.
8. Participation in rotating 24/7 emergency on call supports.

EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS

• Cross Connection Control Certification is considered an asset
• B-Gas Certification is considered an asset
• A-Gas Certification is considered an asset
• WHIMIS, SCOTT, R&R, Mobile Aerial Platform Training, Fall Protection Training, Confined Space Training is considered an asset.
• Experience in VDC and installations based on 3D Models is considered an asset

• Consideration may be given to those who do not possess all the above requirements if they are able to demonstrate a strong work ethic, passion for the trade, and a desire to learn.

SKILLS, ABILITIES, AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS

• Clean Driver’s License and abstract
• Mechanical aptitude
• Strength, stamina, and the use of proper lifting techniques required to handle heavy tools and parts weighing up to 25 kilograms
• Ability to visualize a finished product from a document
• Ability to stand for long periods of time and do some moderately heavy lifting and carrying
• Ability to work in high, awkward, and noisy places
• Ability to work alone or with others
• The ability to contribute to a highly team-oriented environment
• Strong communication skills
