Duties and Responsibilities

  • Enforce municipal animal care and control by-laws and provincial legislation to promote community safety and responsible pet ownership, including pet licensing and the Dog Owners Liability Act.
  • Perform investigations of complaints regarding violations of the Animal Care and Control By-law, including standards of care, animals at large, off-leash activity, dog bites, wildlife feeding, etc.
  • Conduct regular patrols and respond to service requests for domestic and wild animal rescues.
  • Handle and transport domestic, exotic, and wild animals, including those deceased, injured, or in distress.
  • Issue violation tickets, notices of contravention, and appear in court as needed.
  • Maintain logs, reports, and case files for investigations and enforcement actions.
  • Educate the public on responsible pet ownership, community safety, and animal welfare regulations.
  • Assist with delivery of public education programs and community outreach initiatives.
  • Maintain compliance with health and safety standards.
  • Collaborate with other officers and staff, and train and provide guidance to junior officers.
  • Administer humane euthanasia procedures on animals when required.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Skills and Qualifications

  • Completion of post-secondary education (certificate, diploma, or degree) in Law Enforcement, Municipal By-law Enforcement, Animal Health Sciences, Police Foundations, or a related field required.
  • 3 to 5 years of experience and applied knowledge in animal control, by-law enforcement, or law enforcement preferred.
  • Experience in animal behaviour and handling domestic animals and wildlife, including injured, fractious, or deceased.
  • Exceptional customer service, problem-solving, and conflict-resolution skills.
  • Strong communication skills, including experience with de-escalation and tactical communications.
  • Good physical condition, with fitness, strength, and agility required for performance of duties, including the ability to lift up to 50 lbs and work in adverse environmental conditions.
  • Flexibility to work rotating shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
  • Proficiency in using PC applications (MS Outlook, Word, etc.) and records management systems (e.g., Chameleon).
  • Valid Ontario Class 'G' Driver’s License with a driving record that is acceptable to the City.
  • Rabies vaccination or recent titer check required.
  • Must provide a vulnerable sector criminal record check that is acceptable to the City.
  • Must be able to appear in court and provide testimony as an expert witness, maintaining the highest professional and ethical standards as required.

Hourly Rate/Salary: $70,442 - $93,923
