Position Details

Animal Care Services at the University of Lethbridge requires the services of a full-time one-year term Animal Care Attendant for the Science Commons Rodent Research Facility starting on June 2, 2025. Under the supervision of the Rodent Research Facility Coordinator and reporting to the University Veterinarian, the successful candidate’s responsibilities will primarily involve the husbandry care of the rodent colonies: change animal cages and water bottles, complete daily visual assessment of the animals, empty used cages and water bottles, process cages and water bottles through the washer, fill cages and water bottles, process the cages through the sterilizer, receive and store food and bedding, sanitize rooms and equipment as required, ensure that clean animal supplies are available to laboratory members, keep colony housing rooms stocked with necessary supplies, launder gowns, towels and surgical drapes, and report animal health concerns using the colony management software.

The Responsibilities Are Not Limited To Those Listed Above.

This work requires working in a standing position, repetitive motions, and some physically strenuous activities by period (lifting to 50 pounds required). The successful candidate will work 35 hours per week, 7 hours per day from Monday to Friday or Sunday to Thursday, 9:00 – 16:30. This full-time one-year term position may have the opportunity to become a permanent position.

Position Qualifications

  • Applicants must have, at minimum, a High School diploma.
  • Applicants with a Veterinary Technology diploma (RVT), Registered Laboratory Animal Technician (RLAT), a bachelor’s degree in animal science or related disciplines will be an asset.
  • Applicants with significant experience and knowledge in laboratory rodent care will also be an asset.
  • Strong communication and customer service skills, as well as good health are essential.
  • Sound analytical and organizational skills are needed.
  • The successful candidate must be able to function effectively as a member of the Animal Care Services team, work well independently and demonstrate initiative.
  • Successful applicant will be required to provide a satisfactory criminal record check.

Starting Salary Range (at 1.0 FTE): $3,264.00 - $3,618.00 monthly

Full Salary Range (at 1.0 FTE): $3,264.00 - $3,972.00 monthly (AUPE - Grade 5)
