About the role

Reporting to the Manager, Tax, the Analyst, Tax will play an integral role in assisting with the management of global tax compliance for the pension plan. This position will coordinate the preparation of, and will assist with the review and submission of, the income tax, sales tax, and transfer pricing reporting for OPTrust and its subsidiaries. This involves domestic and international filings for over 300 entities across 6 jurisdictions.

In addition, the Analyst, Tax will assist with the tax provision for key subsidiaries and will play a role in strengthening tax risk governance for the pension plan.

The Analyst, Tax will assist the Manager, Tax in assessing process improvements on an ongoing basis, including how to leverage technology to improve the efficiency and automation of tax compliance deliverables. The position will develop process improvements to expedite filings, minimize errors and manage risk within the regular reporting process. The Analyst, Tax will be responsible for updating the electronic tax database and calendar and will assist with ad hoc projects.

The Analyst, Tax will research and analyze tax issues as requested and will assist with administrative tasks as required. The Analyst, Tax will assist in providing tax support for groups including Finance, Legal Services, and the Investment Division.

What you’ll do

  • Assist the Manager, Tax with the preparation and management of tax filings for OPTrust and its subsidiaries.
  • Responsible for maintaining and updating the global tax compliance governance tool.
  • Assisting with tax provision process for subsidiaries and involvement in the exit tax provision process as required, for all internally managed subsidiaries of OPTrust.
  • Preparation of payment requests, journal entries and maintaining all related backup.
  • Coordinate and update the Tax Department budget.
  • Conduct initial reviews of tax provisions, tax returns and associated working papers to ensure compliance with legislative requirements, internal control procedures, completeness of transactions reported, and appropriate and consistent tax treatment of inclusions and deductions.
  • Assist the Manager, Tax with preparation of reporting to the Executive Committee and the Board with respect to tax compliance and the tax positions of OPTrust and its subsidiaries.
  • Assist the Manager, Tax in reviewing existing tax structures to ensure continued compliance with relevant tax regimes.
  • Coordination of the preparation of transfer pricing documentation as required.
  • Assist with operational procedures in the tax department including engagement letter management.
  • Assisting in the preparation of various reporting including CRS and FATCA forms for OPTrust and its internally managed subsidiaries.
  • Assist the Manager Tax in the evaluation of impact of potential legislative changes.
  • Monitor the Tax Department mailbox and action items as required.
  • Assist in responding to queries from tax authorities and assist in tax audits as required.
  • Assist with and support the tax team with various special projects or planning activities as well as other tax related matters as needed.
  • Assist with the coordination of information for withholding tax recoveries with the custodian.
  • Perform certain administrative tasks as required.

What you bring

  • CPA designation or working towards CPA designation. Minimum of 2 years working at an accounting firm or industry.
  • Detail oriented with quantitative and technology skills (Excel, PowerPoint, and PowerBI).
  • Effective technical knowledge of Canadian income tax, including experience preparing and reviewing corporate tax return.
  • Experience reviewing tax compliance is an asset.
  • Proven research skills experience with understanding of Canadian tax law.
  • Ability to prioritize tasks, work on multiple assignments, stay organized, and meet deadlines.
  • Ability to communicate effectively clearly and concisely (verbal and written).
  • High degree of self-motivation and initiative with a proactive and results-oriented approach.
  • Effective analytical and problem-solving skills.
