This position could be located in the following location(s): NOVA Head Office – Calgary, AB

  • This position provides the option to work from home on Mondays and Fridays each week, with the requirement to report to the primary NOVA Chemicals work location on Tuesdays through Thursdays. Employees can opt out of the hybrid schedule and will be expected to work Monday-Friday from the primary work location.

NOVA Chemicals, headquartered in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, is wholly-owned by Mubadala Investment Company of the Emirate of Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates.

We are seeking a Government Relations Advisor to support the Director of Government Relations and Industry Affairs. In this role you will assist the Government Relations and Communications teams with Public Affairs and advocacy efforts in Canada.

You Will Use Your Expertise To:

  • Facilitate engagements with government officials and key Government Relations (GR) and/or Public Affairs (PA) stakeholders as a key liaison, coordinating logistics, and maintaining calendar management.
  • Monitor key Government Relations/Public Affairs events and sponsorships in Alberta, Ontario as well as at Canadian federal level and provide recommendations for NOVA Chemicals involvement.
  • Serve as a key member of NOVA Chemicals’ policy team to develop and maintain public policy positions in conjunction with subject matter experts.
  • Develop responses to Canadian federal consultations requests on plastics and additional topics.
  • Co-ordinate Indigenous relationship engagement work across the organization.
  • Manage potential federal and provincial grant applications, lobbyist registration activities and limited administrative work on budgets for GR and Communications.
  • Assist with co-ordination of public affairs opportunities in conjunction with the Communications Manager on events, meetings, grassroots/grasstops activities (includes maintaining Public Affairs Calendar).
  • Manage the development and coordination of internal NOVA Chemicals briefings on significant GR initiatives (i.e., budget, elections, major policy), significant advocacy, legislation and critical industry association matters.
  • Develop, coordinate, and manage primary GR materials (presentations, fact sheets and leave behind info).
  • Assist with co-ordination of activities and engagement with numerous industry associations.

What We Are Looking For:

  • University graduate with ideally 8+ years related experience and continued professional development or 12+ years combination of post-secondary education and related experience and continued professional development.
  • Ability to understand vision and strategy at the company and business level.
  • Skilled at effectively responding to changing priorities and demands.
  • Ability to develop and implement strategies, strong project management and organizational skills with attention to detail.
  • Ability to recognize and break down barriers to collaboration and reach agreement or consensus on a course of action with others inside the organization.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead, influence and work well with others in cross-functional groups.
  • Skilled and comfortable communicating with individuals at all levels of the organization and representing NOVA Chemicals in the community.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills including writing and editing.
  • Comprehensive understanding of the political and civil service structures of the Ontario, Alberta, and Canadian Federal Governments. Proven ability to identify and engage with key contacts for public affairs and government relations.
  • Experience with project support and execution.
  • Proactive and self-motivated, with the discernment to seek guidance when necessary.

Additional Information:

  • Relocation will be considered for this position.
  • Compensation will be commensurate with education and experience.
  • This role requires up to 10% travel.
  • The successful candidate is required to provide proof of a valid driver’s license.
