Position Title: Accounting Technician (.6 FTE - 21 hours per week)

Position Summary: The Accounting Technician in General Accounting provides comprehensive support to the General Accounting team, other areas within Finance and to various internal departments as needed. This position is accountable for activities related to completion of the monthly bank reconciliations including the preparation and co-ordination of various journal entries related to banking transactions for entry into Banner and investigation and correction of discrepancies between the bank and the general ledger. The Accounting Technician ensures the accuracy of the transactions impacting the Polytechnic’s bank accounts, which funnel through a variety of revenue service streams. A solid understanding of how the various revenue sources feed into the bank and a strong attention to detail is essential to ensuring accurate and timely reconciliation of the Polytechnic bank accounts.

The Accounting Technician prepares various financial information and conducts financial analysis for the Campus Alberta Central (CAC) Joint Venture. This includes the provision of assistance to the Controller with preparing the financial statements and notes for CAC and the provision of financial information to various internal and external stakeholders, as needed. The Accounting Technician assists with the completion of various other financial reporting requirements as needed, monitors fiscal deadlines and ensures accuracy & timeliness with adherence to deadlines while complying with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), Public Sector Accounting Standards (PSAS) as well as other accounting legislation and Polytechnic policies.

Position Responsibilities

  • Responsible for the accurate and timely reconciliation of the high volume of various types of revenue and expense transactions in the Polytechnic bank accounts to the General Ledger.
  • Collaborates with the Fees Office and other areas as needed to investigate and resolve any discrepancies between the bank and general ledger.
  • Prepares various types of journal entries to record accurate and timely cash deposits and withdrawals impacting the bank activities including recording of parking revenue, bank service charges, account transfers, US exchange, US purchases, EFT payments and various other transactions and adjustments as needed.
  • Reviews changes to vendor banking information and address updates to ensure changes have been made appropriately, to minimize the risk.
  • Assists the Controller with the preparation of financial information for the Campus Alberta Central (CAC) Joint Venture.
  • Conducts financial analysis for CAC and prepares any accounting entries required for the joint venture during the year and at yearend to comply with Public Sector Accounting Standards.
  • Assists the Generally Accounting team with preparing various financial information for the trimester and yearend financial statements and for the interim and yearend audit processes.
  • Responsible for assisting with the completion of various financial information for the Government of Alberta Consolidation reporting.
  • Responds to customer or auditor inquiries in a professional and confidential manner, ensuring accurate and timely information demonstrating exceptional communication and analytical skills.
  • Prepares financial information for the Business Income (BI) value calculation for insurance purposes on an annual basis or when requested.
  • Processes general accounting transactions, including account reconciliations and journalizing financial transactions.
  • Various other accounting tasks and project assistance as required.

Required Qualifications

  • Two years of post secondary training in Business Administration or Accounting related field.
  • 3-5 years experience in a similar accounting role.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively, with a strong commitment to open communication, integrity, consistency and respect.
  • Strong knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles.
  • Proven ability to exercise sound judgement and discretion and to maintain confidentiality.
  • Ability to work independently, manage competing priorities and work with various individuals to achieve timely results.
  • Proficient in organizational and time management skills.
  • Ability to complete work with high-level of accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Experience working in a post secondary institution is an asset.
