Title: Accounting Coordinator

Description: The Accounting Coordinator will report directly to the Chief Financial Officer (CFO) and take direction from the Accounting Clerk for daily tasks. This role plays a critical part in maintaining the smooth operation of accounting processes at the Union of Nova Scotia Mi'kmaq (UNSM). The primary responsibilities include organizing accounting records, processing invoices through the pre-accounting software Dext, assisting in payment processing, and supporting the overall financial operations of UNSM. The role requires a high level of confidentiality, professionalism, and accuracy.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. File, organize, and maintain accounting documents for quick retrieval and data integrity.
  2. Enter and manage invoices using Dext (pre-accounting software) accurately and on time.
  3. Assist in payment processing, ensuring timely and efficient financial transactions.
  4. Provide administrative support to the finance department, including document preparation, data entry, and task coordination.
  5. Support the CFO and Accounting Clerk in maintaining financial records and generating reports as needed.
  6. Collaborate with the Accounting Clerk to ensure daily operational tasks are completed, including document management, payment coordination, and system updates.
  7. Ensure confidentiality and maintain discretion in handling sensitive financial information.
  8. Maintain accurate financial record-keeping in accordance with UNSM standards.

Additional Duties:

  • Perform other duties as assigned, which may include tasks beyond those outlined in this description.

Required Qualifications:

  1. Business degree or diploma with a concentration in accounting is preferred, or an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience.
  2. 3–5 years of accounting experience, ideally in nonprofit, government, or First Nations contexts.
  3. Proficiency in Microsoft Office, Teams, iOS systems, and email platforms.
  4. Familiarity with pre-accounting software like Dext is an asset.
  5. Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  6. Excellent organizational skills, with high attention to detail and accuracy.
  7. Ability to work independently and as part of a team while maintaining confidentiality.
  8. Proven ability to meet deadlines and perform well in a fast-paced environment.
  9. Experience working with First Nations communities and/or in nonprofit or government sectors is preferred.
  10. Knowledge of Indigenous and/or Mi'kmaw culture and history is considered an asset.
  11. Ability to speak and/or understand the Mi'kmaw language is considered an asset.
  12. Access to a reliable vehicle and ability to travel within Nova Scotia.
  13. Valid driver’s license and automobile insurance required.

Salary: Based on qualifications and experience
