POSITION TYPE TERM (One Year), FULL-TIME

Reporting directly to the Executive Director (or designate), the Accountant will be responsible for managing accounts receivable, accounts payable, payroll, and financial reporting in compliance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), nonprofit regulations, and all relevant federal and provincial tax laws. The Accountant will act in accordance with the Core Guiding and Service Principles of the Downtown Community Safety Partnership and will be a passionate and driven individual, valuing diversity.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Manage invoices, track payments, and process accounts payable invoices to ensure timely payments are made.
  • Prepare month-end journal entries, and bank reconciliations. Provide regular updates on how funds have been spent.
  • Manage receipts and record expenses for monthly credit card statements.
  • Maintain the general ledger, post transactions and resolve discrepancies promptly.
  • Oversee fund accounting by categorizing finances into different funds based on internal designations.
  • Prepare accurate financial statements (Statement of Financial Position, Statement of Operations, Statement of Changes in Net Assets and Statement of Cash Flows).
  • Lead the preparation of annual budgets, forecasts, and funding reports. Ensure that budgets are adhered to and expenditures align with the organization's financial goals.
  • Ensure compliance with federal and provincial tax regulations, including filing the T1044 (Nonprofit Organization Information Return) and T3010 (Registered Charity Information Return), as required by the CRA.
  • Support payroll processing, including coordination with managers and supervisors to ensure accuracy.
  • Provide financial guidance to senior leadership to support strategic decision-making and long-term planning.
  • Keep up to date with changes to federal and provincial tax laws that impact nonprofit organizations in Manitoba.
  • Support the development of accounting policies, procedures, and best practices.
  • Other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • A bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field is preferred. A CPA designation or progress toward it is an asset. Candidates with a combination of relevant education, training, and hands-on experience are also encouraged to apply.
  • Minimum of 3-5 years of experience in full-cycle accounting, ideally within the nonprofit sector.
  • Strong understanding of nonprofit accounting standards, including fund accounting and GAAP compliance.
  • Familiarity with the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) requirements, including the T1044 and T3010 filing processes.
  • Proficiency in accounting software like QuickBooks and advanced skills in Microsoft Excel.
  • In-depth knowledge of federal and provincial tax regulations, including applicable nonprofit and charity regulations in Manitoba.
  • Experience providing financial guidance to senior leadership and supporting strategic planning.
  • Experience with payroll software an asset.
  • Proven ability to maintain sensitive and highly confidential information.
  • Strong attention to detail, organizational skills, and effective time management.
  • Effective and clear communication skills, both written and verbal.
