Job description

Our large client is seeking an Accessibility Specialist to join their Digital Accessibility team. In this Consultant role, you will support the consistent delivery of accessible customer experiences by evolving and sustaining accessibility forward UX practice and consulting on digital design generally, ensuring accessibility standards and best practices are consistently followed.

In addition, you will collaborate with the UI Manager and the Design System Lead in their efforts to guide and educate the team at large and other stakeholders on Accessibility standards and best practices.

What You Will Do:

  1. Shape and evangelize a culture that takes accessibility beyond compliance and embeds it into our client’s design and decision-making process.
  2. Build and sustain a11y-forward design workflow practice and associated artifacts (e.g. reading/tab order diagramming, UX Copy recommendations).
  3. Advocate for customers who require or would benefit from accessible digital/e-commerce experience.
  4. Directly support the UX Manager and Design System Lead in furthering a11y standards and practice.
  5. Work directly with Product Owners, Business Leaders, and technology teams in an agile way to ensure accessibility is part of requirements’ definition of ready and delivery definition of done.
  6. Proactively identify accessibility-limiting user experiences on our various digital platforms.
  7. Consult on customer-reported accessibility gaps in our digital customer experiences.
  8. Actively collaborate with the Manager, Digital Accessibility Delivery to ensure a11y UX practice evolves in tandem with a11y Delivery practice.
  9. Stay up to date on legislation, latest WCAG drafts, technology, and experience patterns in order to constantly be capable of communicating changes and evolving our approach to accessibility.

Required Skills and Experience:

  1. Demonstrated a11y-first UX/Design experience.
  2. Demonstrated a11y process and practice implementation experience.
  3. Demonstrated understanding and application of current WCAG Guidelines as they relate to UX.
  4. Ability to understand context, establish relationships, and rapport with our teams, stakeholders, and leaders.
  5. Understanding of a11y-specific technical constraints is an asset.
  6. Solid comprehension of the Agile (Scrum) methodology practices.
  7. Ability to work, collaborate, and inspire colleagues across Canadian Tire: Product Owners, Designers, Developers, Testers, and Leaders.

Academic / Educational Requirements:

  1. Design/UX degree or equivalent experience.
  2. Education and/or professional context in both Design & UX.
  3. IAAP Certified Professional in Accessibility Core Competencies (CPACC) and any additional related Accessibility certifications are an asset.
